The Block 2022: killer kitchen design ideas to steal
The Block 2022 kitchen reveals showcased significant trends in home design, focusing on both aesthetic appeal and practical functionality. The kitchens featured in the competition are presented as a showcase for current interior design, influencing trends and demonstrating features that appeal to potential buyers. According to Kate McGlone, Group Design Manager at Winning Appliances, a well-designed kitchen should evoke a sense of comfort and excitement, serving as the heart of the home.
One prominent trend identified is the use of color in cabinetry and cookers. While colorful appliances are not new, the subtle blue/grey/green hues seen in Tom and Sarah-Jane's kitchen illustrate how to make a statement without being overwhelming. McGlone emphasizes that a feature piece like a colored cooker can elevate the design and reflect the homeowner's cooking style. For those less inclined to invest heavily, options like small domestic appliances from brands like DeLonghi and Smeg offer opportunities to incorporate color. Similarly, cabinetry is moving towards natural finishes and richer, earthier palettes. Felicity Page, senior designer at Freedom Kitchens, highlights how Shaker-style profiles and shades like Dry Sage green or rich navy, as seen in Dylan and Jenny's and Scotty Cam's kitchens, connect to nature and create chic, calming spaces.
Oversized kitchen islands also emerged as a key feature, driven by the generous spaces on The Block. These islands are no longer just functional surfaces but are designed to be focal points, incorporating ample storage, engineered stone benchtops, distinctive tapware, and seating for social gatherings. Page suggests that even with smaller kitchens, the concepts of decorative legs or open shelving can be adapted to enhance design and provide accessible storage for items like cookbooks. However, it is crucial to ensure that practicality, such as accommodating oven trays and featuring appropriate sink options, is not compromised for aesthetics.
Metallic accents are another significant trend, serving as accessories to complete the kitchen’s design narrative. Hardware choices, such as brass, brushed nickel, or matte black handles, are effective in recreating the desired look and adding texture and color. McGlone notes the evolution of tapware beyond basic stainless steel, with a wide array of designs and technological advancements available. She advises balancing aesthetics with functionality, ensuring appliances meet practical needs while contributing to the overall design. Similarly, pot fillers, commonly found in European and American kitchens, are gaining popularity in Australia. These dedicated wall-mounted taps above cookers provide convenience and can also serve as a design element, matching other metal features like cooker dials or rangehood trims.
Black kitchens, as seen in Omar and Oz's design, offer a sophisticated and luxurious aesthetic, particularly when complemented by abundant natural light. Felicity describes this style as modern, urban, and industrial. The effectiveness of dark cabinetry relies on brave, all-in execution. Integrated appliances can maintain clean lines for a minimalist feel, while thoughtful lighting design, such as warm LED strip lighting, can add ambience and practical illumination. Finally, butler's pantries continue to be a desirable feature, offering hidden functionality. While The Block often showcases these as full butler's kitchens, the concept can be scaled down for smaller homes, focusing on functionality with simple sinks, open shelving, and basic cabinetry. Prioritizing internal pantry solutions like split storage systems and pull-out pantries enhances their utility, making kitchens both stylish and efficient for entertaining.
