A Reykjavík Pied-à-Terre Inspired by the Natural Colors of Iceland
Designer Sheila Bridges, known for her successful career and unique design sensibility, has established a pied-à-terre in Reykjavik, Iceland. This decision followed her shift away from a farm in Germantown, which she sold in 2015, enabling her to travel more extensively. Reykjavik became a frequent destination for Bridges, due to its accessibility with regular transatlantic flights and its appealing atmosphere, which she likens to a quieter version of the West Village in New York. The city offers a blend of urban activity and natural escapes, with wild countryside just a short distance away.
Bridges's apartment, located on the top floor of a 1930s building, boasts a terrace view that encompasses the colorful rooftops of the city and the ocean. The interior design of this Icelandic retreat is deeply inspired by the natural palette of the country. Bridges has meticulously drawn colors from various Icelandic elements, including the night sky, the North Atlantic, the northern lights, the summer sky, basalt-rock formations, and black sand. This approach ensures that the apartment's aesthetic is intrinsically linked to its unique geographical location.
Key design elements in the living space include a sheepskin-covered Sindra chair and ottoman, designed by Ásgeir Einarsson in 1961, and a sisal carpet from One Kings Lane. The sofa is re-covered in Robert Allen fabric, complemented by custom pillows, and the ottoman features fabric from Quadrille. Teal-blue-and-copper upholstered chairs from George Smith, in Bergamo fabric, add to the cohesive color scheme. These choices reflect a thoughtful curation of furnishings that blend contemporary comfort with touches of Icelandic heritage.
The apartment features several distinctive wallpapers. In one area, Bridges used her own "Torino Damask" wallpaper from the Sheila Bridges Home collection, paired with wall sculptures from Kaolin Keramik Galleri in Reykjavik and a local flea market rug. Another wall showcases a fiberglass reindeer head from the Scandinavian furniture chain Ilva, positioned against a wall painted in a custom shade Bridges named "New Nordic Blue." The kitchen area is particularly notable, featuring a Cedar & Moss light fixture from Rejuvenation and a unique Viking 3D wallpaper by Pratt/Twenty2, which Bridges humorously suggests viewing with 3D glasses. A real taxidermied ewe’s head, purchased from a local shop, and ceramic plates by Paula Greif further personalize the space. The kitchen also includes an Inception Manhattan Skyline Dish Rack by Seletti, adding a playful, urban touch.
In the bathroom, the window shade fabric is by Schumacher, and the ombre wallpaper is from Brett Design. Grohe bath fittings are installed, and one wall features "Postcards From Iceland" wallpaper in basalt from Sheila Bridges's own line, reinforcing the Icelandic theme. The bedroom features walls painted in a custom color called "Tweety Bird Yellow." A wooden stag's head, sourced online, and small mouse lamps by Seletti adorn the space. The custom headboard is upholstered in Jim Thompson fabric with Samuel & Sons trim, and the bedding is from Serena & Lily. Square pillows made from "Funky Agate" linen by Kristi Kohut complete the look. The flooring includes "Vintage Mix" tiles from Flísabúðin and pink sheepskin from Pier, both local suppliers, visible in the view over the rooftops to the sea. The apartment serves as a testament to Bridges's ability to infuse personal history and local inspiration into her design projects, creating a harmonious and uniquely Icelandic living space.
