A Texas Designer Gives an 1898 Folk Victorian a New Life Outside of Austin

Interior designer Claire Zinnecker, despite not actively seeking a new home, discovered an intriguing 1898 Folk Victorian house listed on Facebook Marketplace. The historic dwelling, which she affectionately named Ida after its original Swedish immigrant owners Gus and Ida Anderson, was a significant fixer-upper, featuring dropped ceilings and linoleum flooring. Claire, residing in East Austin at the time, was instantly captivated by the home's potential, envisioning its restoration to its former grandeur. The renovation project began with a considerable challenge: relocating Ida from its original downtown Austin site, which was slated for development, to a five-acre parcel near Georgetown, Texas, approximately 35 miles outside the city. This move, facilitated by Claire and her husband Adam who owned the rural land, offered a welcome change of scenery away from the urban bustle, providing a balance between proximity to city life and a more tranquil environment. With Ida securely in its new location, the extensive renovation commenced. The approximately 1,700-square-foot house was reconfigured from a two-bedroom, one-bathroom layout to a more functional three-bedroom, two-bathroom design, all while preserving the dwelling's original footprint. Claire acknowledged the project's magnitude, describing it as a reconstruction rather than a simple renovation, necessitating the stripping down and rebuilding of many parts of the house. Throughout the process, Claire prioritized preserving and highlighting the home's historic details, including high ceilings, original wood floors, trim, and old hardware. Simultaneously, modern updates were integrated to ensure the home's livability and comfort for the couple. A crucial aspect of the modernization involved installing essential infrastructure such as power, septic, propane, and water, as the original site lacked these amenities. The absence of modern heating or cooling systems in the 1898 structure presented a significant challenge, especially in the intense Texas climate. To address the heating and cooling needs, Claire partnered with Trane Residential to implement an energy-efficient dual-fuel, or hybrid, heating system. This system combines an electric heat pump, specifically the Trane XV20i TruComfort Variable Speed system, with a gas furnace. This innovative approach allows the heat pump to efficiently heat the home in moderately cold temperatures. When temperatures drop significantly, the gas furnace takes over, providing rapid and effective heating. In warmer months, the heat pump functions as an air conditioner, cooling the air and reducing humidity. Claire emphasized her desire for an energy-efficient and comfortable home, noting that the hybrid system met these criteria perfectly. The system's ability to mitigate temperature swings ensures a comfortable living environment year-round, successfully navigating the hot Texas summers and chilly mornings. #VictorianHome #HomeRenovation #InteriorDesign #HistoricPreservation #TexasHomes #HybridHeating #EnergyEfficiency #ClaireZinnecker #DualFuelSystem #VictorianHome #HomeRenovation #InteriorDesign #HistoricPreservation #TexasHomes #HybridHeating #EnergyEfficiency #ClaireZinnecker #DualFuelSystem
