Home design ideas: Playing up the Old World essence of a Savin Hill Victorian
The design of a den in a Savin Hill Victorian home emphasizes a blend of traditional elegance and modern accents. The room, originally a primary bedroom, was chosen for its charming pressed-tin fireplace surround and its view of Dorchester Bay over a tree-lined street, making it an ideal space for entertaining. The architect, E.A.P. Newcomb, designed the Victorian in the late 1800s, and the interior design aimed to complement this historical context. The designer, Erin Glennon, incorporated traditional pieces and family heirlooms, ensuring the space felt special and dressed up without being stuffy.
Key design elements include a sofa re-covered in an indoor/outdoor green velvet. This jewel-toned fabric was selected to elevate the piece, a find from an estate sale auction, and subtly reference the home's era. The sofa also serves as a favorite spot for the family's Persian cat, Greg, due to its texture. For the coffee table, a creative solution was implemented: a remnant slab of white marble was placed on a concrete planter from Mahoney’s Garden Center. This assembly relies on gravity to hold the marble in place, offering a unique and stable surface. An incised, multiface side table, discovered at the Cambridge Antique Market, adds a touch of subtle whimsy to the arrangement.
The floor covering strategy involves a natural jute rug that grounds the room and reduces its formality. Layered on top is a secondhand zebra rug, which acts as a finishing touch, adding visual interest and texture. Rose-gold linen drapery was chosen to draw the eye upwards towards the 9½-foot ceiling. This color choice introduces warmth and color into the room without detracting from the scenic leafy view outside, a deliberate decision to maintain an open and airy feel while allowing residents to appreciate the outdoor environment.
Lighting is addressed with a vintage Austrian crystal chandelier from an estate sale. This piece contributes to the formal aesthetic but is described as unfussy, characterized by its simplicity and lack of "dangly prisms." An abstract painting, sourced from an antiques mall in the South, introduces movement and modernity, contrasting with the traditional elements and adding a contemporary artistic flair. Additionally, the homeowners inherited Chippendale chairs, which Glennon positioned at the ends of a library table from New Hampshire Antique Co-op. This arrangement makes the table versatile, allowing it to be used for games, serving drinks, or even dining, showcasing the practical functionality integrated into the elegant design.
