These 3 New Coffee Table Books Offer Up Design Inspo for Your Next Remodel
This article highlights three new coffee table books focused on design, offering inspiration for home renovations and insights into significant figures and brands in the design world. The books delve into various aspects of design, from the historical reissuing of iconic furniture pieces to the architectural transformation of a luxury flagship store and the eclectic residences of a renowned fashion designer.
The first book, "Echoes, Cassina. 50 Years of iMaestri," published by Rizzoli New York, commemorates the 50th anniversary of Cassina's iMaestri Collection. Launched in 1973, this collection aimed to reintroduce and produce works by modernist design leaders, including pieces that were previously out of production, never realized, or continuously manufactured since their inception. The book explores the history and evolution of this collection, profiling 14 influential designers such as Gerrit Thomas Rietveld, Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Charlotte Perriand, and Pierre Jeanneret. It features historical materials like sketches, technical drawings, letters, and period photographs, many of which are previously unpublished. This volume not only celebrates past achievements but also underscores Cassina's ongoing commitment to design innovation, exemplified by its upcoming lighting collection collaboration with Eames Office at Milan Design Week.
The second featured book is "Tiffany & Co.: The Landmark" by Assouline, which focuses on the comprehensive multiyear renovation of Tiffany & Co.'s iconic Fifth Avenue Landmark building in New York. The book documents the remodeling process and the design philosophy behind the bright and airy interiors conceived by architect Peter Marino. It showcases how the 10-story redesign, which includes a new three-level exhibition and event space by Shohei Shigematsu of the Office for Metropolitan Architecture, transforms the 1940-opened flagship into more than just a retail space. The interior features an extensive collection of contemporary art by artists such as Daniel Arsham, Sarah Sze, Rashid Johnson, and Julian Schnabel, effectively blurring the distinction between a luxury boutique and an art gallery.
The third book, "Karl Lagerfeld: A Life in Houses" from Thames & Hudson, offers an intimate look into the personal spaces of the late fashion designer and Chanel creative director, Karl Lagerfeld. Authored by Patrick Mauriès and former Architectural Digest France editor-in-chief Marie Kalt, this publication is the first to exclusively focus on 13 of Lagerfeld's more than 20 properties, primarily located in Italy and France. The book uses the interiors of these residences to trace Lagerfeld's personal and stylistic journey, presenting numerous images of his meticulously curated spaces. It highlights his diverse collections, including Art Deco furniture, Memphis Group pieces, and his particular passion for 18th-century furnishings and objets d’art. The book reveals a more playful side of Lagerfeld, contrasting with his public persona, through his approach to inhabiting and designing his many homes.
