In Athena Calderone’s New Crate & Barrel Collab, a Bowl Is Also a Candleholder
Interior designer, best-selling author, and EyeSwoon founder Athena Calderone has launched her first furniture collection with Crate & Barrel. The 137-piece collection, inspired by French design of the 1950s and Italian design of the 1970s, is showcased within Calderone's Brooklyn brownstone, with her usual furniture temporarily stored in the basement. Each item in the collection is imbued with a personal narrative, often linked to Calderone's life experiences, such as a marble-top round side table named Revival, which was inspired by a treasured piece accidentally destroyed. The collection emphasizes dual-purpose functionality, a hallmark of Calderone's design philosophy.
Key pieces exemplify this versatility. A matte clay centerpiece bowl features a circular divot that can hold a taper candle, seamlessly blending decorative and practical uses. Similarly, a marble tray designed for serving cheese can also function as an elegant organizer for perfumes and makeup in a bathroom. A storage cabinet, whose design draws inspiration from French 1950s Chambron style with its linear silhouette, is versatile enough to be repurposed as a wardrobe. Even the glassware in the tabletop collection, ideal for wine, is also presented as suitable for serving dessert, reflecting Calderone's appreciation for pieces that can adapt to different occasions.
The collection also extends to outdoor elements, such as travertine planters. These planters, while primarily designed to house greenery, can be inverted and used as pedestals or plant stands, further demonstrating the collection's adaptable nature. An entryway console is highlighted for its potential to serve as a functional desk, underscoring the designer's focus on combining aesthetic appeal with practical utility. This blend of style and substance is a core tenet of Calderone's design ethos, contributing to the collection's overall appeal and making it "swoon-worthy."
Calderone's design philosophy prioritizes objects that tell a story and offer multiple uses, creating a collection that is both beautiful and highly functional. The pieces are designed to integrate seamlessly into various home settings, offering versatility and adaptability. The collaboration with Crate & Barrel brings Calderone's distinctive style, characterized by sophisticated finishes and thoughtful design, to a wider audience, allowing individuals to incorporate these adaptable and aesthetically pleasing elements into their own living spaces. The collection is a testament to the idea that well-designed objects can serve more than one purpose, adding depth and practicality to home decor.
