After sketching, the border is painted with a small brush, and the interior is filled with a roller. The floating shelves themselves were either custom-built from plywood and pine or can be recreated using readily available options like IKEA’s Lack shelves. The critical aspect is ensuring the shelves fit perfectly within the painted circle’s diameter and are spaced evenly. Joy painted her shelves in the same Deep Dive color as the inner circle, allowing them to blend seamlessly with the mural. The functionality of the display is highlighted by how the Lego structures are arranged. More intricate and cherished builds are placed on higher shelves, protecting them from accidental knocks, while the lowest shelf is equipped with baskets for additional toy storage, such as American Girl Doll accessories, leaving room for future acquisitions. To enhance the space-themed design, two plug-in globe sconces from World Market were installed on either side of the circular mural, eliminating the need for complex wiring. Joy used 6-inch-long metal brackets to secure her shelves, a measure proven necessary when her son attempted to use them as a ladder.
