‘Very simple’: Mum-of-two creates kitchen bar for £19 using genius space-saving hack
A mother of two, Harriet Lees, 24, from Telford, successfully transformed her kitchen by installing a space-saving breakfast bar for a mere £19. Her motivation stemmed from dissatisfaction with the excessive space consumed by her traditional kitchen table. Instead of investing in a costly, professionally installed breakfast bar, which can typically run into hundreds or even thousands of pounds, Lees opted for a DIY approach inspired by space-saving ideas found on Pinterest.
Her solution involved purchasing a floating shelf from IKEA for £19. To ensure stability and support for the new bar, she also bought two additional brackets. The total cost of the project, including the floating shelf and brackets, was £95, which also covered two stools from Argos that cost £70. Lees further customized the stools by wrapping them with DC Fix, a self-adhesive film, purchased from B&Q for £6. She recommends using a hairdryer on a low heat setting when applying DC Fix to ensure a smooth finish, especially on curved surfaces.
The installation process required two people to ensure the shelf was properly leveled before the brackets were screwed into the wall. Lees advised adding two brackets on each side of the shelf for enhanced support. Despite the need for an extra pair of hands, she described the project as “very simple and very easy to do, nothing that I struggled with.”
Lees expressed her satisfaction with the outcome, highlighting that the new breakfast bar not only saved significant space in her kitchen but also provided a functional and aesthetically pleasing area for her and her children to eat. The bar is spacious enough to accommodate a full-sized plate, and her children enjoy using it. This DIY project allowed her to achieve a stylish and practical kitchen improvement without a substantial financial outlay, a significant benefit given she did not have the funds for an expensive bar at the time.
Tom Church, co-founder of LatestDeals.co.uk, commended Lees's innovative approach, particularly her use of an IKEA floating shelf, calling it "genius." He noted that her creation is not only stylish and cool but also remarkably budget-friendly and easy for others to replicate. Church also praised the use of DC Fix on the Argos stools, emphasizing its effectiveness in achieving a chic look without excessive spending.
