How can you add texture to a kitchen? This designer's kitchen is a lesson in adding tactile touches

Marie Flanigan, an award-winning interior designer, undertook a kitchen remodel in her own home with the primary goal of integrating rich textures to create a space that is both elegant and warm. Flanigan emphasizes that texture was the defining element, transforming the kitchen from merely functional into a thoughtfully layered and inviting environment. Her design approach consciously balances hard and soft finishes to achieve this tactile richness. The foundation of the kitchen's textural narrative begins with the flooring: bespoke Paloma limestone. This material was chosen for its natural, worn texture, which immediately imbues the room with character and a sense of grounding. The limestone features a French Quarter finish, adding a subtle roughness that contributes to a historical feel and provides depth. This robust, textured stone anchors the kitchen, offering permanence and durability, essential for a central family space. Complementing the ruggedness of the limestone floors are the Michelangelo Arebescado Dolomite countertops. This polished stone, characterized by its soft veining, introduces a refined texture. While smooth to the touch, the natural movement within its veining creates visual depth, forming a striking contrast with the rougher limestone below. This interplay between the rough limestone and smooth dolomite establishes a harmonious dialogue, balancing the textures throughout the space. The kitchen cabinetry serves as another crucial textural component. Constructed from stained white oak, the wood's natural grain introduces a tactile quality that enhances warmth and richness. The smooth, matte finish of the oak provides a visual softness, contrasting with the cool, polished stone of the countertops. The earthy tones of the oak cabinetry also harmonize with the limestone floors, ensuring a continuous flow of natural materials. This cabinetry effectively bridges the gap between harder elements like stone and softer, more organic materials, contributing both visual and tactile warmth. To further counteract the hard finishes, Flanigan incorporated softer textures through woven materials. Custom grassweave shades are a key addition, introducing an organic, earthy texture that softens the overall aesthetic of the room. Their slightly irregular weave adds a touch of imperfection, fostering a sense of ease and comfort. The way these shades filter light contributes to a welcoming atmosphere, casting a soft glow that beautifully contrasts with the more structured lines of the cabinetry and countertops. The walls, painted in Sherwin Williams Greek Villa, provide a calming, neutral backdrop. This creamy white allows the layered textures, natural wood tones, and stone finishes to stand out without competition, creating a serene environment. Natural elements are further integrated through the light fixtures. Pendants and sconces, designed by Flanigan herself, combine brass with natural oak, adding another layer of tactile interest. The oak in the sconces echoes the cabinetry, while the brass provides a sleek, polished contrast that matches the hardware and faucet selections. Even minor details, such as the light bronze cabinet pulls, were chosen for their texture. Their handcrafted finish lends an artisanal feel, adding character and depth to the cabinetry, especially when paired with the natural wood and soft kitchen lighting. While aesthetics were a priority, practicality was not overlooked. The limestone floors are durable and suitable for family life, and the smooth dolomite countertops offer elegance with easy maintenance. The combination of woven shades and warm oak cabinetry creates a cozy and inviting kitchen, suitable for both family meals and entertaining guests. By meticulously layering textures—from stone and wood to fabric and lighting—the kitchen becomes a luxurious yet lived-in space, where every detail contributes to a rich, tactile experience that reflects the home's heart. #KitchenDesign #InteriorDesign #TexturalKitchen #MarieFlanigan #LimestoneFlooring #DolomiteCountertops #WhiteOakCabinetry #WovenShades #NaturalMaterials #KitchenDesign #InteriorDesign #TexturalKitchen #MarieFlanigan #LimestoneFlooring #DolomiteCountertops #WhiteOakCabinetry #WovenShades #NaturalMaterials
