doshi levien: paper planes for moroso
The London-based design studio Doshi Levien, comprising Nipa Doshi and Jonathan Levien, has developed a new furniture collection named 'Paper Planes' for the Italian manufacturer Moroso. This collection was first unveiled at the 2010 Salone del Mobile, an international furniture fair. The inspiration for 'Paper Planes' originated from the creation of a unique fabric that integrates Swarovski crystal elements. The designers aimed to combine the mathematical and scientific aesthetic of folded graph paper with the festive quality of crystals. This was achieved by designing a checked pattern with thin black and white lines, each incorporating a subtle line of crystals. The intention was for the crystals to be an integral part of the design, appearing almost invisible, hidden by the lines, and only becoming apparent when light reflects off them.
The design philosophy behind 'Paper Planes' was to craft a visual language that is both architectural and spatial, characterized by ornate details without being overtly ornamental. The name 'Paper Planes' itself reflects the design process, which involved creating furniture shapes through folding and forming darts, much like one would with paper, drawing inspiration from the checked fabric pattern. This methodology resulted in a seating design that is intended to be cozy and comfortable for reading, yet visually light, giving the impression of defying gravity.
The collection includes both low-back and high-back versions of the seat. The chairs are constructed with a robust steel structure, enveloped in cold-cured polyurethane foam upholstery. The cover is available in two distinct versions: one features a printed Kvadrat Remix fabric enhanced with Swarovski crystal applications, while the other is a jacquard fabric. The 'Paper Planes' range offers a standard version that can be configured into a modular seating system, providing flexibility for various spatial arrangements, alongside a version with a higher backrest for enhanced support and comfort. Each chair in the collection is meticulously marked with the Moroso logo and its year of issue, underscoring its authenticity and design lineage.
