Celebrate the Year of the Snake with Hennessy Limited-Edition XO
Maison Hennessy has unveiled a new limited-edition collection for Lunar New Year 2025, celebrating the Year of the Snake. This collection, titled 'Reimagination,' is a collaboration with fashion designer Shuting Qiu. The partnership blends fashion and luxury, drawing inspiration from the snake's symbolism of renewal and positive transformation, encouraging a departure from the past and an embrace of new beginnings. Qiu, who hails from Hangzhou and is based in Shanghai, integrates her cultural heritage into the designs.
The collection features vibrant, abstract interpretations of a snake across the carafe designs for Hennessy's iconic VSOP and X.O. bottles. These designs incorporate splashes of color and prints, such as ancient brocade patterns, to mimic the texture and scales of a snake. Qiu's inspiration stems from the traditional jacquard fabric, brocade, and embroidery prints commonly used in clothing and textiles in her hometown. She has reinterpreted these symbolic floral motifs and abstract snake scale patterns to adorn the Hennessy bottles. Each bottle uses red as a base color and tells a unique story. A subtle nod to Hennessy’s heritage is present in the snake's movements through the patterns, which are designed to evoke the Charente River in Cognac.
Shuting Qiu developed two distinct artworks for the Hennessy bottles, each inspired by the unique blends of the cognac. The V.S.O.P edition is characterized as 'youthful and energetic' by Qiu, featuring vibrant red floral motifs and Hawaiian-inspired elements in an artistic celebration of color. This design combines plaid and abstract snake scale silhouettes, symbolizing both renewal and legacy. It incorporates a blend of four distinct Shuting Qiu-designed patterns, including traditional motifs and an abstract representation of the snake. The gift box for the V.S.O.P edition utilizes embossing techniques to create texture, mirroring Qiu's design approach with sequins and glitter in her fabric creations.
The X.O edition presents a bold and dynamic aesthetic, showcasing rich shades of red, gold, and blue. This design features lozenge shapes inspired by traditional motifs and is topped with a gold cork. Qiu’s interpretation of transformation and renewal is visually expressed through an embossed snake design that gracefully glides across the print. The recyclable gift box for the X.O edition also features an embossed blend of patterns, giving it an almost fabric-like texture. These limited-edition carafes are designed to be ideal gifts for the Lunar New Year season or to be enjoyed during gatherings with friends and family. They can be served over ice, paired with food, or used in celebratory New Year cocktails, such as 'The Snake,' for which a recipe is provided. The carafes themselves are also intended to serve as decorative centerpieces within the home.
Shuting Qiu shared her perspective on the collaboration, highlighting that Hennessy provided her with a significant platform to share her vision as a young designer. She noted that similar to fashion brands having classic silhouettes and designs, the Hennessy carafes are classics. Qiu mentioned that Hennessy is a common drink in her family during Lunar New Year and among her friends, appreciating its versatility. Laurent Boillot, CEO of Hennessy, expressed his pleasure in welcoming Shuting Qiu, stating that her designs embody a harmonious fusion of tradition and contemporary flair, paying elegant homage to shared cultural heritage. Qiu’s background includes studying at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, where she lived for five years, an experience she credits for influencing her work by blending Chinese and Western elements.
