Gustaf Westman creates chunky 3D-printed shelves based on interlocking puzzles
Swedish designer Gustaf Westman has introduced a modular shelving system, named Puzzle Shelf, characterized by its playful and colorful components that can be configured in various ways. The design is a result of Westman's interest in puzzles and an exploration of interlocking forms. The system aims to offer both aesthetic appeal and functional versatility within a space.
The Puzzle Shelf consists of horizontal modules designed to stack and connect, forming not only bookshelves but also adaptable pieces like coffee tables, side tables, or desks. The modules evoke the shape of jigsaw puzzle pieces, engineered to interlock on all sides—top, bottom, and both horizontal edges. This intricate design allows users to experiment with different arrangements, adapting the furniture to their specific spatial requirements and personal preferences. The complexity of achieving a shape that could connect universally required extensive modeling and testing, according to Westman, with the primary challenge being the multi-directional interlocking mechanism.
For manufacturing, the pieces are produced by a 3D-printing specialist in London, ensuring precision and smooth surfaces. Following the 3D-printing process, the forms are coated with a spray lacquer, which imparts a ceramic-like finish and highlights the rounded contours of the modules. This finishing technique aligns with Westman's broader design philosophy of achieving a consistent aesthetic across various materials, whether wood, ceramics, glass, or 3D-printed components. The designer has expressed an ongoing fascination with testing diverse materials and striving for a unified surface quality across his creations.
In keeping with Westman's distinctive style, the Puzzle Shelf is available in a range of bold colors, including blue, green, pink, and red. These color options offer fun and cohesive possibilities for personalizing the furniture. Westman describes his approach to color selection as spontaneous and intuitive, often relying on his 'gut feeling' after extensive testing. The product was initially showcased at a three-day pop-up event in New York City, where it was presented alongside other colorful objects and furniture designed by Westman.
The Puzzle Shelf is made to order and can be acquired directly from Westman's studio, with pricing available upon request. Gustaf Westman established his Stockholm-based studio in 2020 after completing his architectural studies. His work is recognized for its whimsical objects that reinterpret familiar forms through chunky shapes and glossy finishes. His portfolio includes collaborations with IKEA on a tableware collection and with Mercedes-Benz on an all-pink concept car and picnic set, alongside other unique product designs such as a baguette holder resembling a handbag.
