KEF Ci200QSb-THX and Ci200TRb In Wall Subwoofer Preview
KEF has introduced two new architectural subwoofers, the Ci200QSb-THX and the Ci200TRb, designed for in-wall or in-ceiling installations. These products aim to provide substantial bass performance without occupying floor space, catering to aesthetic preferences and spatial limitations in modern home designs. The announcement was made at the 2016 CEDIA Expo in Dallas, Texas.
The Ci200QSb-THX is an 8-inch square subwoofer that is THX-certified, offering various configuration options. When four Ci200QSb-THX units are paired with a KASA500 amplifier, they achieve THX Select 2 certification standards. For more demanding audio environments, combining eight Ci200QSb-THX subwoofers with a KASA500 amplifier allows them to meet THX Ultra 2 certification standards. This indicates a high level of audio performance and adherence to specific industry benchmarks.
In contrast, the Ci200TRb is an ultra-thin architectural speaker featuring an 8-inch dual-voice coil subwoofer. Its notable characteristic is its minimal mounting depth of just 50mm (1.96 inches), making it suitable for installations where cavity space is extremely limited. Both models incorporate KEF’s Ultra-Thin Bezel (UTB) technology, which results in a nearly invisible rim around the speaker assembly. This design choice contributes to a seamless integration with interior aesthetics, as the speakers become virtually indistinguishable from other KEF architectural speakers when their grilles are in place, providing significant flexibility for installers and designers.
Both the Ci200QSb-THX and Ci200TRb operate in two distinct modes. In passive mode, they serve as an effective solution for enhancing the bass response of existing architectural sound systems. Their design allows them to fit within standard 2x4 inch construction cavities, facilitating a clean and minimalist look in whole-house audio setups. For enhanced performance, in active mode, these subwoofers are designed to be paired with KEF’s KASA500 subwoofer amplifier, a 250WPC Class-D DSP amplifier. This active configuration enables the subwoofers to deliver extended and emphasized low-frequency sound.
A significant feature of all KEF Ci architectural speakers, including these new models, is their Marine Grade Construction. This robust build quality ensures durability and longevity, even in challenging environments. The grilles are treated with a corrosion-resistant coating, the terminations are moisture-resistant, and the plastic components are UV-protected. These design considerations mean that the subwoofers are capable of withstanding harsh conditions, such as salt-spray and high humidity, making them suitable for outdoor applications or installations in coastal areas where environmental factors could typically degrade electronic equipment. KEF aims to provide a solution for consumers seeking powerful bass without compromising on interior space, with availability starting in December, priced at $400 for the Ci200QSb-THX and $425 for the Ci200TRb.
