Kickstarter's tiny self-watering herb planter is back with a bigger, better design
The Pico Max is an advanced, self-watering planter that aims to simplify indoor gardening for a wider audience, building upon the success of its predecessor, the original Pico. Designed to transform kitchen counters into thriving kitchen gardens, this compact device supports the growth of various plants, including herbs, fruits, vegetables, sprouts, succulents, and leafy greens. The initial Pico, launched previously, successfully garnered over $1.5 million in crowdfunding by offering a highly compact and versatile self-watering solution that even provided artificial sunlight, making plant care effortless for novice gardeners.
Responding to the demand for a more robust gardening solution, the Pico Max features a wider gardening bed, allowing for a greater variety and quantity of plants. It is available in a selection of vibrant colors, serving both a functional and decorative purpose within home interiors. A transparent window on the front of the planter enables users to easily monitor the water level in its dedicated reservoir. The Pico Max utilizes a self-watering system based on capillary action and gravity, eliminating the need for motors or pumps and simplifying maintenance; users only need to replenish the reservoir approximately once a week. Ventilation holes at the bottom of the planter promote root oxygenation, contributing to quicker and healthier plant growth.
One of the key features of the Pico Max is its integrated LED lighting system. This system is calibrated to mimic natural sunlight, providing the necessary wavelengths for photosynthesis. The LED panel is mounted on telescopic arms, allowing users to adjust its height as plants grow. An industry-first proximity sensor automatically dims the lights, preventing overexposure and leaf burn. The device operates on a 10,000 mAh battery, providing up to four days of power, but can also be connected to a continuous power source for uninterrupted use. For larger gardens, multiple Pico Max units can be daisy-chained together using its three USB Type-C ports, minimizing cable clutter and allowing a single power outlet to supply several planters.
Setting up the Pico Max is straightforward, often compared to preparing instant noodles. It offers an optional all-in-one microgreen kit that includes seeds, nutrients, and a growth medium. After placing the seeds and filling the water reservoir, plants typically begin to sprout within a week. The planter's versatile design allows it to be placed on flat surfaces or wall-mounted, and it can also be magnetically attached to surfaces like refrigerators, similar to the original Pico. This multi-mount system includes a magnetic base and a multipurpose metal bracket, providing flexibility for placement in various locations, even those without immediate power access when using the optional battery. The Pico Max is designed to remove the complexities of gardening, making it accessible to a broader audience and enabling users to grow a diverse range of plants, from decorative flowers to essential kitchen ingredients.
