The kitchen, situated in a 1922 house in Rustic Canyon, underwent a remodel designed to enhance functionality and social engagement. Saltsman emphasized creating a space that is not only efficient for cooking but also welcoming for guests.
The kitchen's design incorporates practical elements tailored to a prolific cook. For instance, multiple sets of measuring spoons are strategically placed to save time during cooking. The cooking alcove features pots and pans within arm's reach, reflecting a layout optimized for ease of use. A prominent Wolf Gourmet range, equipped with two ovens, six burners, and a grill, is a focal point, complemented by a shelf displaying a collection of copper and All-Clad cookware. Various salts, peppers, and oils, including three types of olive oil and avocado oil for vegan dishes, are readily accessible.
Functionality extends to the kitchen island, which includes a butcher block section. The microwave is positioned near the dining table, indicating its primary use for reheating rather than extensive cooking. Similarly, coffee equipment, cups, and dishes are conveniently located near the dining area and island stools, making it easy for early risers to prepare breakfast without disturbing others or navigating the main cooking zone.
The aesthetic of the kitchen, while functional, also holds sentimental value for Saltsman. An example is her pastry cutter, a gift from a friend, which belonged to the friend's grandmother and was used to make farmhouse rolls. Saltsman values such objects for the sense of continuity they provide across generations, integrating personal history into the practical space.
Despite the thoughtful design, Saltsman acknowledges minor imperfections. The three windows above the sink are surrounded by wood that meets the counter directly, lacking a traditional backsplash. This design choice has led to water damage over time, requiring refinishing of the wood. Saltsman humorously points out this design flaw, highlighting that even well-planned spaces can have practical challenges.
Saltsman's culinary philosophy centers on basic, humble foods. She aims to empower individuals by demonstrating how to approach cooking without intimidation. This philosophy is reflected in the practical and accessible nature of her kitchen design, which supports a high volume of cooking and entertaining. The overall impression is a kitchen that is lived-in, highly functional, and a testament to a life deeply engaged with food and community.
