Parametric patterns of the Khesht Baf by Image Architects
The Khesht Baf building, located in west Tehran, is a four-story structure designed by Image Architects. It comprises two underground levels featuring a swimming pool, gym, parking lot, storage, and mechanical room, while the first and second levels house the primary living spaces. The design's central challenge was to create a living environment for two brothers that balanced contemporary Iranian lifestyle requirements with the existing structure's unique form. The initial phase of the project focused on allocating spaces for shared activities in the roof garden, backyard, pool, and gym, which guided the integration of interior and exterior elements.
A key design consideration involved managing privacy from neighboring buildings while simultaneously maximizing views of a nearby park. This led to the implementation of curved panels with parametric patterns on the building's exterior. These strategically designed apertures effectively limited views from the street into the rooms, enhancing the privacy of the residents, while simultaneously optimizing the sightlines from the interiors towards the green area on the west side of the structure. This approach to visual control contributed to a sense of security and tranquility within the living spaces, aligning with both climatic principles and traditional Iranian cultural values regarding privacy.
Further functional benefits of the parametric design included the creation of lattice shells that provide necessary thermal regulation. These shells are designed to supply warmth during winter months and block excessive sunlight in the summer, contributing to energy efficiency and occupant comfort. Additionally, these brick panels served as a filter against urban visual pollution, enhancing the aesthetic quality of the views from within the building. The dynamic interplay of inside-out framing, the fluidity of the parametrically expanded frames, and the intricate patterns collectively offer a visually engaging experience for observers.
Beyond aesthetic and environmental considerations, the project also addressed practical concerns such as construction speed and economic viability. The need for a rapid construction start-up and cost-effectiveness influenced the modularization of the building's panels and architectural features. This modular approach significantly accelerated the operational pace of the construction, demonstrating how parametric design can integrate complex aesthetic and functional requirements with efficient and economical building practices. The Khesht Baf building, completed in 2018 with a total area of 912 m², represents a fusion of traditional design principles with modern parametric architectural techniques.
