The Insider: Park Slope Limestone Stunner Gets Top-Notch Revamp, Laid-Back Style
This article details the comprehensive renovation and interior design of a 1901 limestone row house in Brooklyn's Park Slope, situated near Prospect Park. The project, described as more of a restoration than a renovation, was a collaboration between Brooklyn Heights-based CWB Architects and Portland, Oregon's Jessica Helgerson Interior Design (JHID). The homeowners sought a casual, eclectic, and kid-friendly aesthetic, deliberately avoiding a fancy or pretentious feel.
CWB Architects focused on structural and functional updates while preserving the home's original character, including well-preserved inlay floors and exquisite woodwork. Key architectural changes involved installing all-new bathrooms and a new kitchen, which was relocated to what was formerly part of the butler’s pantry, necessitating the removal of a service stair to the cellar. A significant remodel transformed a top-floor area into a playroom for the family's three sons, and central sinks and closets on the second floor were removed to create a library, integrated into a new master suite.
Jessica Helgerson Interior Design was responsible for the complete furnishing and decoration of the house. A notable design decision involved painting the dining room's wood-paneled walls white, a choice made after considerable deliberation to brighten the space, which was not naturally super-bright, and to balance the existing abundance of wood from floors, box beams, cabinets, and trim. Most rooms feature white walls, allowing color to be introduced primarily through the furnishings.
Specific design elements and material choices are highlighted throughout the article. The ground floor was designated as a play space for the single-family occupants. The entry vestibule features custom floor tile designed to echo the ironwork on the original exterior doors. In the front parlor, a blue tufted sofa and many other upholstered pieces are custom designs by JHID, complemented by a pink wing chair by Frits Henningsen for Carl Hansen and a Bubble chandelier by Lindsey Adelman. The middle parlor includes two custom curved sofas by JHID, and its existing fireplace was updated with new tile work. The dining room received new cabinetry with leaded-glass doors, a table designed by JHID, spindle chairs by BassamFellows, and an ultra-modern chandelier by Lindsey Adelman.
A wide hallway connects the dining room to the kitchen, lined with new cabinetry. The kitchen, located in an existing extension at the rear of the parlor floor, received added windows above the sink. It features stain-grade butternut cabinetry, white marble counters, and a Cluny range from Lacanche. Custom wall tiles in the kitchen were crafted by Tempest Tileworks from a pattern by artist Lindsay Cowles.
The master bedroom opens onto a deck above the kitchen extension. A multi-purpose library area, accessed through new arched French doors, is furnished with a custom JHID table and four blue Saari chairs by Arper. The master and children’s bathrooms are similar in design, both featuring vanities by Drummonds and mosaic floor tile designed by JHID and produced by Pratt & Larson. The children's bath includes a tub instead of a shower. The top floor hallway showcases newly made leaded glass in the skylight and a built-in storage cabinet. An upstairs playroom, with an upholstered, skylit reading nook, was created from a former cluster of closets.
