Four storage hacks for creating an entryway even if you don't have the space for one
Many homes lack a dedicated entryway, leading to clutter from everyday items such as keys, mail, and bags accumulating in living spaces. Creating a functional entryway, even in small areas, is achievable through clever storage solutions that mimic the utility of a mudroom. These hacks focus on maximizing limited space while maintaining aesthetic appeal and organization.
One effective method involves utilizing Ikea spice racks to create a compact drop zone. Christina Dennis, known as The DIY Mommy, demonstrates how two Bekvam spice racks and a Hultarp rail with hooks can be assembled and mounted to a wall. This setup provides shelves for mail, keys, and pet supplies, with hooks for hanging jackets and bags, offering a complete entryway function in a minimal footprint.
Another hack centers on shoe storage, which is particularly beneficial for narrow spaces or areas where shoe clutter is a common issue. Slim shoe storage units, some designed to fit behind doors, offer practical solutions. An example highlights the use of four Ikea Trones units, combined with wooden planks, to create a larger, more stylish storage piece that can also hold decorative items and a key bowl. The Trones units also feature a recessed area on top, suitable for umbrellas, and similar options are available from other retailers like Kmart with their two-tier panelled shoe cabinets.
The bench seat hack provides a combined storage and seating solution, ideal for homes where the front door opens directly into the living room. This can involve purchasing a storage bench, such as Kmart's boucle storage bench, or using any bench seat with added baskets underneath for shoes. Stefanie Bloom showcased a 'Get Ready Station' she created with a bench and a curtain rod for hanging jackets, emphasizing functionality over perfect aesthetics, especially for renters or those unable to drill into walls. A freestanding coat rack can serve as an alternative if wall-mounting is not an option.
Finally, the storage cube drop zone hack, inspired by school lockers, is suitable for homes with more space and children. Sarah from @fourtheloveofboys illustrates this hack using Flexi Storage Clever Cube units from Bunnings. By assembling the unit and omitting the top two cubes, hooks and storage baskets can be integrated, creating an organized space for school bags and other items. This system helps children manage their belongings and keeps the entry area tidy, as demonstrated by the use of Target cube baskets.
