Jávri Lodge / Arkkitehtitoimisto Teemu Pirinen
Jávri Lodge, a boutique hotel located at the edge of the wilderness in Saariselkä, Finnish Lapland, underwent an expansion in 2017. The building, once the skiing retreat of Finland's longest-serving president, Urho Kekkonen, and host to notable guests including royalty, superpower leaders, and the Shah, was designed by Arkkitehtitoimisto Teemu Pirinen. The expansion added a new main entrance, a dining hall, and four new hotel rooms, integrating these new volumes with the existing structure. The new sections are characterized by their copper-clad exteriors, strategically placed in front of and on top of the original building, creating a contemporary yet harmonious extension.
The architectural design of Jávri Lodge prioritizes functionality and comfort, recognizing that guests typically engage in various outdoor activities throughout the day. The hotel is conceived as a warm and cozy refuge where visitors can rest, relax, and enjoy culinary experiences after active days spent exploring the surrounding wilderness. This approach is reflected in the interior design, which aims to provide a welcoming and restorative environment. The project, covering an area of 336 square meters, was completed in 2018, with photographs by Marc Goodwin capturing its distinctive features.
Key collaborators in the project included Corrotech Oy for glazing, LVI-Insinööritoimisto Meskanen Oy (Matias Meskanen) for HVAC systems, Räihä Interiors for interior design, and Rakennusmestari (Tatu Valkonen) as the builder. Structural engineering was managed by Mikko Keränen of Pohjois-Suomen rakennetekniikka Oy, and electrical design by Veijo Mikkola of Ivalon Raja-Sähkö Oy. The carpentry work was carried out by Tapani Laine. The clients for this project were Katja Kivioja and Juha Mehtäjärvi. The materials used in construction largely include wood, glass, and steel, contributing to the lodge's modern aesthetic while ensuring durability in the Nordic environment.
Jávri Lodge is categorized under hospitality architecture, specifically hotels, reflecting its primary function. Its location in Saariselkä, Finland, plays a significant role in its design ethos, emphasizing integration with the natural landscape and providing a comfortable base for guests exploring the Lapland region. The project showcases how an existing historical building can be respectfully expanded and modernized to meet contemporary demands, while still retaining its unique character and connection to its past. The blend of traditional and modern elements, particularly the use of copper cladding against the older structure, illustrates a thoughtful approach to renovation and extension in a sensitive natural setting.
