'It's the only thing that made sense' – this Brooklyn loft's clever TV display isn't just for looks, it's key to the home's layout
In the trendy Dumbo neighborhood of New York, an apartment in a former warehouse has been transformed by interior designer Crystal Sinclair, maintaining its industrial charm with coffered ceilings and pillars. The design focuses on maximizing the abundant natural light and preserving the impressive proportions of the open-concept space. A striking feature is the glass and steel wall separating the main living area from the bedroom, which, while enhancing light and sightlines, presented unique design challenges. Sinclair aimed to make the expansive, bright space feel private and intimate when desired, and to elegantly conceal modern home elements that might otherwise detract from the aesthetic.
One significant challenge arose from the use of a glass room divider instead of a solid wall. This meant that furniture and decor had to be appealing from every angle, as there were no solid walls to hide the backs of pieces or tangled wires. Sinclair embraced this challenge, for instance, by selecting an arched headboard for the bedroom that serves as a statement piece not only within the bedroom but also from the living room. This choice softens the industrial look of the metal and glass partition. In the living room, a curved boucle sofa and an innovative TV stand solution were chosen with multi-directional viewing in mind. The TV is mounted on an easel, a solution driven by necessity rather than purely aesthetics. This approach avoided placing a media unit against the partition wall, which would have exposed cords and the back of the unit from the bedroom side, thus maintaining the clean lines and visual flow of the space.
To balance the industrial architecture and high ceilings with a sense of coziness, Sinclair introduced a luxurious design language. She emphasized the importance of texture, incorporating elements like drapes to add warmth and a 'wow factor.' Spatial tricks were also employed to create a more intimate atmosphere; for example, an oversized chandelier was strategically placed to define the living space and make it feel cozier. The use of vertical space prevents the loft from feeling too vast. The design also contrasts neutrals in public areas with less contrast and more texture in private spaces, providing structure to the open-concept kitchen and dining area. A kitchen island table, sourced from Chairish, adds an interesting worn texture that complements the luxurious marble cladding in the kitchen.
Further details contributing to the loft's unique character include the terracotta tile cladding on supporting columns, integrating them purposefully into the design and adding an extra textural dimension. This allows for minimalist cabinetry with simple white slab doors, letting the more characterful elements stand out. The large scale of the open-concept space also accommodates several accent walls, such as a grey limewash and a modern slat wall that ingeniously conceals a hidden door, adding layers of interest and functionality to the apartment. This comprehensive design approach ensures both aesthetic appeal and practical living in a challenging open-plan environment.
