Hanging A Plate Wall Is Easier Than You Think, Thanks To This Pantry Staple
Plate walls are a classic decorative element that can make a house feel like a Southern home, offering a budget-savvy alternative to art. They come in a wide array of patterns and colors, effectively filling large wall spaces and often carrying deep sentimental value. However, the process of installing a plate wall can seem daunting, particularly when aiming for precise placement without damaging walls with misplaced nail holes.
Designers Bradley Weatherly and Elisabeth Hanes from Sorella Interiors have developed a clever and foolproof method for hanging plate walls. Their approach begins by eschewing traditional metal plate hangers, which they believe detract from the plate's aesthetic and are less versatile for uniquely shaped dishes. Instead, they recommend using Disc’s Invisible Plate Hangers. These hangers adhere discreetly to the back of the plates with water, much like a stamp, and feature small rings for easy hanging on nails. A key advantage of these invisible hangers is that they allow the plates to sit flush against the wall, creating a more refined and integrated look compared to traditional hangers that cause plates to protrude.
The most innovative part of their technique addresses the common challenge of accurately marking nail placements. They utilize a simple pantry staple: aluminum foil. The method draws inspiration from childhood art activities, specifically coloring over a leaf with a crayon to create an imprint. To begin, several widths of aluminum foil are taped together to match the overall width of the intended plate wall display. The plates, with the invisible hangers attached and facing upwards, are then laid out on a flat surface. The prepared aluminum foil is carefully placed over the plates, and an outline of each plate, along with the position of its hanging ring, is pressed into the foil, creating clear indentations.
This indented aluminum foil then serves as a precise template. Using painter's tape, the template is affixed to the wall where the plate display is desired. Nails are then hammered directly into the indentations corresponding to the hanging rings on the foil. Once all nails are securely in place, the aluminum foil template is removed from the wall. The plates can then be effortlessly hung onto their designated nails, resulting in a perfectly arranged and aesthetically pleasing plate wall on the very first attempt, eliminating the need for correcting misplaced holes or extensive wall repair. This technique simplifies the process, making it accessible for anyone to create a professional-looking plate display.
