The Block 2019: Formal Lounge Room Reveal
This blog post provides a detailed review of the formal lounge room reveals from Week 2 of 'The Block 2019' competition, featuring five contestant teams: Matt and El'ise, Mitch and Mark, Tess and Luke, Andy and Deb, and Jesse and Mel. Each team's design approach, key elements, and judges' feedback are highlighted.
Matt and El'ise from Western Australia secured the win with a score of 29/30 for their formal lounge. Their design paid homage to heritage details, incorporating oversized cornices, an ornate ceiling rose, and an arch and corville in the hallway. The judges, particularly Shaynna, praised their color palette, which included burnt orange drapes, occasional chairs, and colonial-detailed cabinetry. The use of Venetian plaster walls, high-fashion photographic prints, a grey lounge, and a matching rug contributed to a cozy, homely feel. A deco-style drinks trolley added functionality. Neale commented on the room's ability to tell a sophisticated, yet usable family story, capturing a sense of 'home' rarely achieved in a new space. Darren noted the room's success in reflecting the opulence of the Gold Rush era, fitting the Oslo building's history.
Mitch and Mark created a formal lounge with an 'Old Hollywood' inspiration, scoring 28.5/30. Their design featured a rich palette of blues, greens, and burnt oranges, including royal blue inlaid carpet, a blue velvet couch, and green velvet occasional chairs. The judges appreciated their bold use of color, especially the spiced orange drapery. Whimsical elements such as a glass and bronze 'pineapple' table, an art deco feature table with reading lights, a large brass planter with a Maidenhair Fern, and a quirky torso vase were noted. While Shaynna found it 'lush and over the top' but loved it, Darren expressed minor reservations about the marble-look cabinetry.
Tess and Luke delivered a pared-back yet stylish formal living space, earning a score of 22/30 despite a challenging week. Their room showcased a black feature fireplace, white floor-to-ceiling drapes, a sunken ceiling, blue velvet couches, a circular decor-style table, and peach-colored occasional chairs. The hero piece for Tess was an understated deco-style chandelier. Neale and Darren were impressed by the room's seamless integration with the hallway and the stunning parquet-style flooring, particularly the matte finish herringbone pattern. They felt the room offered a modern aesthetic with a sense of grandeur that suited the house's heritage. Shaynna suggested lowering the chandelier and expressed concerns about the artwork placement, but the judges acknowledged the couple's effort under difficult circumstances.
Andy and Deb opted for a 'coastal luxe' theme in their formal lounge, scoring 25.5/30. A striking green feature wall in the hall served as a beautiful contrast and enhanced their chosen artwork. The room itself featured exposed brickwork above the fireplace, white cabinetry, a brown leather couch, and two green occasional chairs. Judges commended their art selection, especially a piece by Jonathan Gemmell, for its vibrant colors that complemented the chairs. Shaynna highlighted the couple's effective use of oversized elements, such as a large copper coffee table, substantial artwork, large chairs, and an enormous palm. Neale appreciated the fusion of styles—Scandi, mid-century pieces like structural pendant lights, and art deco styling—which collectively created a coherent and inviting first impression, maintaining a 'colonial' feel appropriate for the building's heritage.
Jesse and Mel aimed for a 'Toorak' sense of opulence, investing significantly in their formal lounge, which scored 23/30. Their design included brass-inlaid double doors, a sumptuous chandelier, large-scale artwork, and dark-colored cabinets. Two green occasional chairs acted as focal points, contrasting with a white couch and rug to create an elegant yet relaxed atmosphere. Darren admired the room's grandeur and stateliness. Neale, while acknowledging their ambition, felt the room was less 'homely' than others, suggesting it might appeal more to an investment buyer. The design blended Federation touches with deco features, such as round brass lamps and coffee tables. The judges liked the contemporary pendant light paired with a Federation ceiling rose, though Shaynna questioned the marble feature tile around the perimeter. The article concludes by pondering whether Jesse and Mel's bold design choices will ultimately yield success on auction day.
