Christine and John Gachot are in the mood for deep plum velvets, rich red mohairs, and patinated brass finishes
In a recurring blog series called "What I Love," designers are invited to create mood boards featuring their current inspirations. This installment highlights Christine and John Gachot, the husband-and-wife team behind Gachot Studios in New York. Known for their downtown-inspired aesthetic, the Gachots emphasize collaboration in their design process, comparing it to curating a dinner party where different artists, artisans, and vendors contribute to a shared vision and push creative boundaries. Their featured mood board showcases a rich tapestry of textures and moody hues, designed to evoke an urbane, warm tonality executed with luxurious materials, reflective of a dream home.
The Gachots' design philosophy, as articulated by Christine, centers on finding harmony in texture, luxury in materiality, and comfort in application, always striving for an unfussy yet considered timelessness regardless of the project's specific themes. The mood board itself serves as a tangible representation of this approach, incorporating a diverse range of design elements. Key materials include a textured wool fabric called Navarra in Drapello by Kohro Italy, ideal for throw pillows or window treatments, and Marci Mohair in Brick from Makrosha, which provides a vibrant pop of color against a backdrop of browns and beiges.
For velvets, the Gachots selected Applause Cotton Velvet in Coffee Song by Gretchen Bellinger, an iconic fabric designer, noting its deep plum color that verges on black and complements other rich tones. Another choice is Plush Velvet in Dark Truffle from ALT for Living, a perennial favorite on their mood boards. The inclusion of Byredo’s La Tulipe Eau de Parfum highlights the importance of scent in creating an immersive atmosphere, drawing inspiration from hotel experiences where fragrance is a deliberate design decision. Dualoy Leather’s Milan in Pop Bottle, inspired by high-end Italian leather accessories, offers a soft, lustrous feel, while Nancy Lorenz's panel detail signifies a long-standing collaborative partnership, with her work notably featured in the Pendry Manhattan West.
Additional elements contributing to the board’s sensory richness include Loewe’s Liquorice Candle, emphasizing the theatrical aspect of finishing a project with accessories and ambiance. Hardware from Waterworks’ Bond collection, designed by Gachot Studios, underscores their commitment to modern yet timeless fixtures that feel luxurious to the touch. Forte in Vanilla from Dualoy Leather is suggested for lining simple wooden trays for an elevated touch, and custom rugs from ALT for Living and Mark Nelson Designs demonstrate their preference for layered carpets and bespoke solutions, particularly for challenging spaces like a Paul Rudolph townhouse.
Seating choices include a custom sofa in Brochier’s Leonida in 017 Moro, a rich dark brown velvet, and Rivoli II Fabric in Camel by Manuel Canovas, a deep-pile mohair velvet that offers both luxury and a streamlined look. Metal mixing is encouraged with a custom patinated brass sample from Gachot Studios, ensuring a dynamic and evolving finish. Stone selections feature Calacatta Viola Honed Marble from BAS Stone NYC, a female and family-owned business praised for unique stone specifications. A custom mirrored sample from Stephen Cavallo New York is chosen for its glamorous appeal.
Finally, the mood board incorporates various shearling and wool options: Krystal Brown Shearling from Dualoy Leather for accent pillows, and Curly Wool Shearling from Roman and Williams Guild as an alternative to trendy boucle, offering richness, texture, and comfort with a nod to Nordic modernism. Cobble Fabric in Willow from ALT for Living provides an elevated linear boucle composition, and Highline in Dark Roast from Dualoy Leather emphasizes the importance of high-quality materials, particularly in leatherwork. Collectively, these elements form a cohesive vision for an interior that is deeply textural, richly colored, and exuding sophisticated comfort.
