Decorating with Purple? Here Are the Best Colors to Pair with It 💜

Purple, often associated with royalty and opulence, is experiencing a resurgence in home decor, moving beyond its reputation as a challenging color to decorate with. Joanne Thomas, head of content at Coloro, notes that purple's current popularity stems from its ability to bridge the gap between real-life experiences and digital influences, ranging from soft lavenders reminiscent of ultraviolet rays to vibrant 80s-inspired shades. Despite its inherent boldness, purple offers significant versatility when paired thoughtfully with other hues. Designers emphasize the importance of considering the room's mood and desired impact. Deeper, darker purples can evoke a sense of opulence and coziness, especially when combined with colors like teals, deep browns, and forest greens. Eleven top designers share their insights on harmonizing purple with various colors. One effective strategy is to pair different shades of purple, such as lilac with a medium to dark purple tone. This approach creates a sophisticated contrast while maintaining family cohesion, as seen in an Upper East Side apartment designed by Alex Papachristidis. Gold and brass finishes are also recommended to introduce a luxurious and glamorous feel, making the space resemble a high-end hotel. The warm tones of brass pop against purple, elevating the overall aesthetic. For a classic and graphic contrast, purple can be combined with black and white. Deeply saturated, warmer purples, especially with a glossy finish, appear luxurious when set against the starkness of black and white, reminiscent of flowers and fruits. This method is exemplified in a New York City apartment where bold burgundy cabinets are paired with graphic black and white marble slabs. To achieve a soothing, light, and airy ambiance, lilac can be matched with lighter blues and whites, a technique utilized by textile designer Lisa Corti in her Milan apartment. Gray serves as an excellent complement to purple, particularly purples with a true blue undertone. This pairing helps maintain purple's cool tone and grounds its passionate, strong, and regal qualities, as demonstrated in a South Florida home designed by Rodney Lawrence where purple functions as a neutral. For a rich and earthy feel, selecting purple tones that lean towards burgundy or wine is advised, avoiding brighter, more pinkish hues. PlaidFox integrated this in a Vancouver home by pairing a jewel-toned burgundy headboard with orchid-hued cushions. Cream and other soft neutrals like sand and sea foam can also balance purple, with Michael Cox of foley&cox; suggesting matching the depth of the purple shade with similar depth neutrals, such as mauve with alabaster or amethyst with pine. Brown, another neutral, adds sophistication and diminishes any potential 'cuteness' associated with purple, especially when combined with shades of brown. Landscape architect Thomas Woltz's Virginia Victorian showcases this by using Benjamin Moore’s Wet Concrete with timber trim and furnishings. For an edgy and modern look, purple and black are an effective duo, with purple enlivening neutral tones and looking fresh when paired with black finishes and hardware. This was achieved in a Connecticut cottage using high-shine gray paint and a plumb-colored chair. Finally, for accent colors that create tension and visual interest, chartreuse and red are suggested, to be used sparingly in artwork or fabrics, as seen in Christina Juarez's New York home. Teal and other blues and greens are also favored with bolder eggplant shades, as shown in Susan Barrett’s St. Louis arts club, further highlighting purple's expansive decorative potential. #PurpleDecor #ColorPairing #InteriorDesignTrends #HomeDecor #DesignerTips #ColorPsychology #LuxuryInteriors #ModernDesign #HomeRenovation #PurpleDecor #ColorPairing #InteriorDesignTrends #HomeDecor #DesignerTips #ColorPsychology #LuxuryInteriors #ModernDesign #HomeRenovation
