Ward + Gray’s wildflower-fueled selection of deep green mohair, silver travertine and natural leather
The design duo behind Ward + Gray, Christie Ward and Staver Gray, demonstrate their approach to crafting well-layered interiors by detailing the mood board for the guest rooms at Wildflower Farms resort in the Hudson Valley. Their design philosophy centers on an eclectic blend of antique items, distinctive prints, and contemporary raw materials to create spaces that convey authenticity and character. For the Wildflower Farms project, the primary inspiration was the surrounding natural landscape, emphasizing a strong connection to nature and blending interiors seamlessly with the property. This connection was established by photographs of the wildflower-filled fields, which guided the color palette for the entire scheme.
The mood board features a curated selection of materials and finishes that reflect a rustic yet refined aesthetic. Among these is a hand-knotted wool rug, custom-designed by Ward + Gray, which incorporates colors and a wildflower motif drawn directly from the landscape. Another key element is a burnished brass finish sample from local metalworker Doug Newton, chosen for its natural patina and used throughout the project. The designers also included an interior rendering of a Ridge Cottage, which accurately depicts the installed design.
Further emphasizing the natural theme, the mood board incorporates a custom Swedish flat-weave style rug for the entryways, again pulling colors from the wildflowers to create a unique palette. A fuzzy ivory faux shearling fabric from Pindler was selected for chairs, providing coziness for nights by the fire. For bedside tables, Dyna fabric in Green Tea by Fil Doux Textiles, a 100 percent recycled knit, offers a durable option with a worn-leather appearance. Honed and tumbled silver travertine vein cut from ABC Stone was used for bathroom vanities, with its natural veining contributing to the rustic charm.
Reclaimed oak wood flooring, inspired by images of knotty and imperfect wood, was sourced from Madera Surfaces for the restaurant walls, adding texture and warmth. Hand-formed Zellige tiles, sourced from Vietnam and similar to styles from Clé Tile, provide a natural and organic feel with their imperfect rice-paper finish. An Ottoman fabric in Lampas Blue by Robert Kime, with its rich, moody tones, evokes the antique inspiration found upstate. Custom mohair from Valley Forge Fabrics, dyed in a deep green hue, further reinforces the landscape's influence.
Additional materials include Acadia leather in Iron by Moore & Giles, chosen for its ability to wear beautifully over time, and Alder fabric in Patina by Erica Shamrock Textiles, with olive tones reminiscent of the outdoor greenery. Photographs of indigo plaster walls inspired the intimate, mudroom-like entryways of the cottages. Finally, Wyatt Check fabric in Indigo by Ralph Lauren at Designers Guild, a woven gingham, was used for bed pillows to create a rustic farmhouse feel, and Diavolo fabric by ZAK+FOX was selected for its spirit and woven quality.
