I Skipped the Plumber and Upgraded My Shower With This $163 Kit
The author recounts their persistent dissatisfaction with their apartment's shower, describing initial issues like a detached temperature handle and an awkward spout placement in a bath-shower combo. The fixed, single-stream showerhead further contributed to a less-than-ideal showering experience. Motivated to improve this crucial space without risking their security deposit, the author explored rental-friendly showerhead upgrades.
During their search, the author discovered Sproos! on Instagram, a direct-to-consumer brand launched in 2020. This brand appeared to offer the desired blend of aesthetics, functionality (three spray settings), and rental-friendly installation and removal. The article focuses on the author's experience testing out a Sproos! shower kit, detailing the selection, installation, and eventual removal processes.
Sproos! offers four shower models and seven color options, including recent additions like pink, green, and blue for their hand shower. The author chose "The Minimalist" in black, priced at $163, which includes a hand shower on an adjustable slide bar and a soap dish. Other models like "Stayin’ Connected" ($211) feature a magnetic phone dock and cup holder, while "Lookin’ Good" ($235) provides an anti-fog mirror and a larger shelf. A notable aspect of Sproos! products is their eco-conscious manufacturing; they are free of chrome plating, which is highly toxic, and instead use premium silicone for nozzles, high-grade anodized aluminum for the rail, and injection-molded ABS plastic for colors. The brand also offers a filter system to remove rust, silt, chlorine, chloramine, and heavy metals.
The installation process was detailed, with components arriving in lightweight cardboard boxes that also served as instruction manuals via printed steps and QR codes linking to video tutorials. The kit included necessary tools such as pliers, a reusable silicone pad, biodegradable gloves, screws, Allen keys, and the brand's proprietary glue-mounting technology. The first step involved removing the old showerhead, which proved challenging due to its tight installation, necessitating the use of the provided silicone pad and pliers to prevent damage. The next phase involved connecting the new bracket, 70-inch hose, and showerhead. A minor leak occurred after initial connection, which was resolved by contacting Sproos!'s online support, who identified a missing rubber buffer. The final step, gluing the bracket to the tiled wall, was initially daunting but straightforward, utilizing a strong adhesive developed with a German brand, Tesa, which allowed for drill-free installation. The author highlights the 12-hour drying time required for the adhesive as a key consideration for planning the DIY project.
After approximately 18 months, the author moved apartments and had to remove the Sproos! shower system. The showerhead hose detached easily, but the wall mount required forceful removal due to the author having misplaced the Allen key. Despite the strong adhesive, the tile remained undamaged, with residue easily cleaned off using a plastic putty knife and sandpaper. The author also discovered Sproos! offers a "moving kit" to re-install the shower bar in a new location. Ultimately, the author praises the upgrade, particularly the large round head and multiple spray settings, which significantly improved their showering experience, despite the minor initial leak and adhesive drying time.
