Apartment office ideas – 10 ways to make room for a desk when space is tight

Working from home has become a common necessity, leading many to consider how to integrate a functional office space into their apartments, especially when square footage is limited. This article provides ten creative solutions for setting up an apartment office that is both practical and allows for a clear distinction between work and home life. The emphasis is on designs that can be discreetly put away at the end of the workday to maintain mental separation. Before embarking on any design, it's crucial to assess the long-term necessity of a home office. Tom Klaber, founder of k-da, advises against allocating excessive space if the remote work setup is temporary. The presented ideas cater to various work-from-home lifestyles, from occasional use to full-time remote work. One effective strategy is to create a desk behind doors, utilizing small niches like closets. This allows the workspace to be self-contained and hidden when not in use, which is particularly beneficial for entertaining. Key considerations for this setup include selecting doors that don't obstruct the space when open, such as pocket doors or vertical split doors, and ensuring adequate lighting with diffused LED strips due to limited natural light. Another approach involves using room dividers to separate the desk area from the main living space. While full sound separation might require significant infrastructure, freestanding screens offer an adaptable solution for privacy during video calls and for concealing the desk at day's end. These dividers can also function as decorative elements or be folded away to free up floor space. Positioning a desk by a window is often recommended for maximizing natural light, which benefits eye health and mental well-being. Nathan Cuttle of Studio Nato highlights the advantage of being able to take short breaks and look outside. However, this depends on individual preferences; some, like video editors, might prefer darker environments, and window glare or unsuitable backgrounds for video calls can be downsides. An alternative is building a slimline desk across a large window, as popularized by Athena Calderone, which retains the view while adding wall space and fostering a connection to the outdoors, aligning with biophilic design principles. For comfort and maximizing workspace, a floating desk is a good option. It provides ample desk surface and eliminates the constraints of table legs, allowing more legroom or under-desk storage. These desks, like those designed by Line Design Studio, offer flexibility for various tasks beyond just computer work. Integrating a desk into custom millwork during a larger apartment renovation can create a cohesive and maximized storage solution, especially effective for modern home offices. Nathan Cuttle notes that while built-ins are an added cost, they offer custom functionality and optimized space utilization, such as a corner desk with a view. When a desk must be in a living area, subtlety is key to prevent it from becoming a constant reminder of work. Solutions include ladder desks that resemble bookcases or using existing furniture, like a console table, as a dual-purpose desk. The use of a visually light chair, such as a Phillipe Starck Ghost chair, can also help the workspace blend seamlessly into the decorative scheme. Utilizing underutilized spaces, such as awkward corners or alcoves, can provide a dedicated workspace in small apartments. Custom-built desks tailored to these unconventional areas, combined with suitable office furniture, can transform an otherwise overlooked spot into a functional mini-workspace. Making an area multi-task is another practical suggestion. For instance, a dining table can double as a desk, or a vanity in a bedroom can serve as a workspace. The article encourages creative thinking about transforming spaces for different functions, such as using a console table in a living room as an impromptu desk, with appropriate seating that doesn't dominate the space. Finally, innovative solutions like retractable desks, as seen in a London apartment redesign by Ben Allen, offer the ability to enlarge the desk area when needed and completely conceal the office when not in use, highlighting practical approaches for small apartment living. For studio apartments, adaptability and multi-functional furniture are crucial, including fold-away desks or even loft beds to create extra space for an office underneath. Positioning a desk creatively, such as behind a sofa in the center of the room, can also work without disrupting the flow of the space. #ApartmentOffice #SmallSpaceDesign #WorkFromHome #HomeOfficeIdeas #InteriorDesign #SpaceSavingFurniture #BiophilicDesign #CustomMillwork #RoomDividers #ApartmentOffice #SmallSpaceDesign #WorkFromHome #HomeOfficeIdeas #InteriorDesign #SpaceSavingFurniture #BiophilicDesign #CustomMillwork #RoomDividers
