SwitchBot Bot review: Convert your dumb light switches into smart ones the easy way
The SwitchBot Bot offers a simple and affordable solution for transforming traditional rocker-style light switches into smart, app-controllable devices without requiring any electrical work. Priced at $29, this small, pillbox-sized Bluetooth-only gadget features a telescoping arm designed to physically press light switches. Its primary appeal lies in its ease of installation, attaching to an existing light switch cover plate with adhesive tape, contrasting with magnetic systems used by competitors like Switchmate. The device is powered by an included 3-volt CR2 battery, with an estimated lifespan of two years.
Initially, the Bot can only press in one direction, limiting it to turning a switch on. To achieve both on and off functionality, users must switch the device to “switch mode” within the app and connect an additional adhesive-and-string attachment between the Bot’s arm and the light switch. While this method enables dual functionality, it significantly detracts from the device's aesthetic. Despite its primary focus on light switches, the Bot demonstrates versatility, having been successfully used with other appliances like coffee makers, electric kettles, and even a hacked garage door controller, provided the button is positioned appropriately for the Bot’s arm to reach.
The accompanying SwitchBot app, paired via Bluetooth, provides basic functionalities such as on-demand switch activation and scheduling, allowing users to automate tasks like turning lights on or initiating coffee brewing at specific times. The app also supports holding the Bot's arm down for an extended period, up to 60 seconds, for buttons requiring a longer press. For integration with voice assistants like Alexa and Google Assistant, as well as SmartThings and Siri, the SwitchBot Hub Mini ($39) Wi-Fi bridge is required, as the Bot itself is Bluetooth-only. Although not officially supporting Apple’s HomeKit, workarounds exist for users wishing to integrate it into that ecosystem.
Compared to alternatives like the Switchmate, the SwitchBot Bot is slightly less expensive and offers a unique ability to interact with various buttons beyond just light switches. However, its industrial design and the necessary workaround for on/off operation (the string attachment) make it less aesthetically pleasing than the Switchmate, which also offers a more integrated on/off solution without additional rigging. The Switchmate, while pricier at $35, boasts a better appearance and simpler on/off functionality for light switches. The SwitchBot Bot finds its niche for users seeking a cost-effective, non-invasive method to add smart control to rocker switches or to automate the pressing of other specific buttons, especially for those who are renting or uncomfortable with complex electrical installations. Its main drawback is the need for a separate hub for smart home ecosystem integration and its less refined design, particularly when configured for full on/off control.
