paul crofts assembles modular storage collection of timber units for isomi
Paul Crofts Studio introduces 'assembled,' its inaugural storage collection for British furniture company Isomi, featuring five modular units crafted from Douglas fir timber. The collection emphasizes a minimalist aesthetic, highlighting materiality and construction through its intentionally simple forms. The units are designed to complement Isomi’s existing range of metal and concrete reception desks, tables, and seating, but are also versatile enough to function as standalone pieces. A key design consideration is that details are visible from both the front and back, allowing for flexible placement in a room, either mid-floor or against a wall.
The collection includes five distinct storage and display systems, all designed for stacking and interchangeability. One of the standout pieces, 'Chamfer,' is a system of connecting modules that seamlessly lock into a larger frame. This particular piece showcases a blend of materials, incorporating hot rolled steel, concrete, and Valchromat. Its refined yet simple design provides a highly flexible and adaptable storage solution. The doors and frame of 'Chamfer' are constructed from hand-selected hot rolled steel, while the legs are made from stain-resistant cast concrete. An optional infill of perforated hot rolled steel mesh is available, offering a transparent backdrop that enhances the visual depth of the storage modules.
Another significant component of the collection is 'Stack,' a modular stacking system built around an innovative 'U'-shaped design. In this system, each unit relies on the component above it to form a complete and stable structure. The 'Stack' system features a Douglas fir timber frame, which provides a visual contrast to the unit's legs, base frame, and doors, all crafted from authentic hot rolled steel. This system offers numerous configurations, allowing for fully or partially open or closed arrangements, and includes options for displaying documents, literature, and artwork, catering to diverse storage needs.
The 'Grid' storage system draws upon Isomi’s extensive experience with solid surfaces, presenting a slim and lightweight aesthetic achieved through lacquered MDF. Complementing the 'Grid' and 'Stack' systems is 'Bench,' designed as an integrated element. 'Bench' features a simple black Valchromat platform with a matt lacquer finish. Its internal metal framework extends to two legs, which are clad in stain-resistant cast concrete, ensuring durability and stability. The '360' storage unit, composed of just three components, is designed with both open display shelves and closed storage options. It features an internal carcass of black Valchromat, contrasted by lacquered MDF doors with an elegant chamfered handle detail. '360' is particularly well-suited for creating extended runs of storage or for use as a room divider, offering both functionality and aesthetic appeal within various interior settings.
