Julia Sobrepeña King’s contrary curation of orange zellige tile, bright green rugs and curly gray shearlings

Julia Sobrepeña King, the designer behind Studio Roene in San Francisco and Los Angeles, is known for her ability to blend contrasting prints and colors, balancing bold hues with neutral tones and a mix of small- and large-scale patterns. Her current mood board is inspired by a recent trip to the Cabanon de Le Corbusier, a colorful seaside vacation home on the French Riviera, aiming to evoke a playful spirit with bright tones and natural woods. The resulting scheme highlights a balance of opposites, combining vibrant finishes and textiles with earthy, organic materials. King also incorporates hand-crafted pieces collected from her travels to add a personal touch, making the overall aesthetic adventurous and exciting. King details several elements that contribute to this unique mood board. These include one-of-a-kind colorful plastic cord baskets from Antiga Oaxaca, discovered during a trip to Oaxaca, which are woven by prisoners trained in traditional basket weaving. A custom Temples rug by Mark Nelson Designs is featured for its graphic nature, depth, and texture. The Alpi Quadra Noce Veneer by Patricia Urquiola at Alpi, with its modernist grid pattern, is envisioned for custom cabinetry or tables. Hard Maple with an oil finish by Sawkille is chosen as a less common yet refined and durable hardwood alternative to oak. The Seaside Bronze metal finish by Urban Electric Co. is appreciated for its worn copper or bronze verdigris appearance, offering a fresh, minty color and aged character. The mood board also incorporates a hand-glazed mustard tile called Thin Brick Tile in Pumpkin Field Gloss by Country Floors, a unique and saturated color ideal for a backsplash or bathroom. A custom woven fabric from Narda’s Handwoven Arts & Crafts, a famous weaving shop in the mountains of Baguio in the Philippines, is included, reflecting King's passion for collecting one-of-a-kind fabrics during her travels. Gotland Shearling in Natural Gray by Howe at 36 Bourne Street provides heavy texture, transforming gray from potentially dull to balanced when paired with fun colors and textures. A custom woven rug from Stark Carpet in a bright green spring color with a subtle geometric square pattern adds dimension and interest. Additional selections include Solana Honed Concrete Tile in Mocha by Concrete Collaborative, valued for its muted, earthy tone that pairs well with bold marble or ceramic tile. Unlacquered polished copper is chosen as a classic material that ages beautifully, ideal for combining with natural rustic woods and moody colors for a touch of shine. A vintage necklace made by her architect grandmother, featuring rare amber cylindrical beads and a unique gold medallion, adds a personal and inspiring element. The Primavera fabric in Claret by Lauren Hwang, with its hand-crafted feel and deep eggplant polka-dot pattern, offers elegance. Douglas Plank Flooring with a light oil finish by Dinesen is selected for its light color and contrasting grain. Orange Zellige Tile by Otto Tiles & Design, described as a shocking dull neon orange, is proposed as a surprising element for a powder room. The Ria fabric in 0741 by Raf Simons for Kvadrat, with its embroidered feel and subtle floral pattern in pastel colors, contributes a cheerful note. The Cambridge Strie Braid Tape in Heather by Samuel & Sons, a moody purple tone, is suggested as an accent for drapery or upholstery. Finally, the Saru fabric in No. ZFSU-02 by Zak+Fox, a playful tapestry with metallic yarns and rich blue tones, is deemed perfect for a pillow, alongside a hand-made ceramic bowl, which brings a personal, imperfect, and storytelling quality to the curation. #DesignInspiration #InteriorDesign #MaterialSelection #ColorPalette #GlobalCrafts #SustainableMaterials #TextileDesign #HomeDecor #ArtisticCuration #DesignInspiration #InteriorDesign #MaterialSelection #ColorPalette #GlobalCrafts #SustainableMaterials #TextileDesign #HomeDecor #ArtisticCuration
