BRC's Halide Chandelier Transforms 28 Disused Lightbulbs into a Dazzling Energy Efficient Lamp
The Halide Chandelier, a creation by Benjamin Rollins Caldwell of BRC Design Studio, represents a fusion of mid-century modern aesthetic with contemporary sustainable innovation. This lighting fixture repurposes 28 disused industrial halide lightbulbs, transforming them into an energy-efficient chandelier. The design will be showcased at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair in New York City.
Caldwell's design reinterprets the traditional chandelier structure, where dazzling elements typically hang from a central base. In the Halide Chandelier, the 'crystals' are composed of repurposed industrial halide lightbulbs. These bulbs, which were originally used in a warehouse near BRC Design studio, were collected after burning out. Caldwell then modified each of these glass vessels by removing their original filaments and retrofitting them with four LED bulbs to provide illumination. The piece is further enhanced by salvaged copper cable, which is woven and affixed to each bulb, completing the industrial-chic aesthetic.
The project not only results in a stylish and energy-efficient lighting solution but also served as a catalyst for broader environmental impact. Inspired by Caldwell's initiative to collect and reuse the halide bulbs, the factory from which they were sourced decided to replace its remaining burned-out halide bulbs with new, energy-efficient motion-detection lighting systems. This change highlights the significant energy consumption associated with halide bulbs, which are known for being energy-intensive lighting systems.
Through the Halide Chandelier, Caldwell makes a statement about sustainability and thoughtful design. By converting energy-hungry industrial waste into an aesthetically pleasing and energy-efficient product, the piece advocates for the practical application of recycling and upcycling in contemporary design. It demonstrates how discarded industrial components can be given a second life, contributing to both environmental conservation and artistic expression.
