'Feast in the House of Simon' Series
The "Feast in the House of Simon" furniture series, created by Ohio-based designer Mark Moskovitz, draws inspiration from a 15th-century oil painting by Dutch artist Dieric Bouts. The series, which includes a dining table, coffee table, side chairs, and a bench, features a minimalist aesthetic with powder-coated aluminum frames and clear-coated, ebonized, or pickled oak wood. The design journey began in 2005 when Moskovitz, during a resident artist program in Berlin, encountered Bouts' c. 1475 painting, "Christ in the House of Simon," at the Gemäldegalerie. He was particularly captivated by the table legs depicted in the artwork, finding their form surprisingly modern and anachronistic for the period.
Moskovitz made a small sketch of the painting at the time, noting the unique leg design. Years later, while preparing for an exhibition at ICFF, he revisited this initial inspiration. Utilizing the Google Art Project, he was able to re-examine the original painting and compare it to his earlier sketch. He realized that his initial sketch had incorporated some personal interpretation of the leg design. For the actual furniture series, he decided to adhere more closely to the original painting's design for the table, recognizing that over half a millennium provided sufficient distance to reintroduce the design without significant alteration, beyond essential structural considerations. The other pieces in the series, such as the side chairs and bench, allowed for more interpretive freedom, translating the painting's truss-like structure into their silhouettes.
All components of the "Feast in the House of Simon" series are manufactured by hand within a one-hour radius of Moskovitz's studio in the USA. This localized production model allows for a high degree of customization, a distinct advantage over mass-produced furniture. Moskovitz highlights the ability to offer customers a wide array of colors, specific dimensions, various wood species, and finishes. This approach positions his work in a middle ground between bespoke studio furniture and large-scale mass production, catering to clients seeking personalized design solutions. The dining table is priced at $1398, the coffee table at $998, side chairs at $498 each, and the bench at $1498.
