Designing and decorating with black and white
This article delves into the bold and unconventional interior design of a model home in Skye Isle at Covenant Hills in Ladera Ranch, which exclusively features a black and white color scheme. The residence, which sold for over $2 million, showcases a fearless approach to mixing textures, prints, and patterns within this strict monochromatic palette. The design concept was initiated by builder K. Hovnanian Homes, drawing inspiration from the colonial exterior of the home, which was adapted for Southern California living by William Hezmalhalch Architects. This adaptation involved traditional white clapboard siding contrasted with black-tiled roofs, softened by burnt sienna and brown bricks.
Marni Duncan, founder and creative director of Model Home Source Inc., the firm responsible for the interior design, highlights the challenge of designing an entire home in black and white without the typical use of accent colors to add warmth. This was particularly demanding in an architectural context that leans more towards traditional and suburban aesthetics rather than urban and contemporary styles. Duncan’s goal was to achieve a "cosmopolitan without the hard edge" look. The article provides specific examples of how this theme was executed across various rooms.
In the Foyer, a black-trimmed mirrored chest of drawers is paired with a ceramic umbrella stand featuring a Toile de Jouy print. The floor is an elliptical-shaped hall adorned with lattice-patterned wood and marble tiles, creating a striking entrance. The Living Room emphasizes drama with ink-black walls and white drapes. It includes a black baby grand piano, an L-shaped seating arrangement with a nailhead-trimmed black sofa, and two low black-framed chairs with soft white upholstery. These pieces are accented with throw pillows featuring grid and oversized tapestry-like patterns. Subtle touches of pewter, chrome, and silver in lamp bases, curtain rods, art frames, fixtures, and house plants provide metallic highlights rather than color.
The Library presents a distinct contrast with a black ceiling, white walls, and white shutters, serving as a backdrop for a pair of zebra-print chaise longues. Deep-brown wood planks on the floors introduce a warm, natural break in the otherwise stark palette. The Kitchen incorporates warm woods, with cabinets finished in mahogany and a central island resembling a large butcher block in shades of dark and milk chocolate, maintaining the black and white theme while adding depth. The Master Suite features an elliptical sitting room, a "lovely little surprise," with vertically striped white drapes, elegant suede wingback chairs, and a white tufted silk ottoman, adding a touch of femininity.
The article concludes by suggesting that individuals considering a similar black and white design for their own homes should view the color combination as a foundational narrative, akin to the artistic approach of Piet Mondrian. It proposes that incorporating an additional favorite color—such as pink, red, lime, yellow, cobalt, or orange—into each room could be the perfect way to complete the overall aesthetic and personalize the space, moving beyond the strict two-tone mandate to achieve a balanced and inviting environment.
