In northern Italy's Piedmont region, a distinctive modernist pavilion stands as a contemporary interpretation of a castle, enveloped by its own body of water and accessible via a drawbridge. This architectural marvel, designed by Duilio Damilano of Damilano Studio, sought to create a secluded oasis, blending Italian luxury with the serene aesthetics of a Japanese Zen garden. The client and architect shared a mutual admiration for Japanese design principles, which significantly influenced the project's interior and exterior elements. The exterior of the pavilion features a large garden, conceptualized by landscape gardener Paolo Roagna. This garden draws inspiration from symmetrical Japanese botany, incorporating sculptural Bonsai trees and water features harmoniously alongside indigenous trees and shrubs. The building's perimeter is defined by sculptural metal grid structures on opposing sides. These grids are not merely aesthetic; they provide essential shade during the summer months and are adorned with geometrically positioned square blocks of Fir wood, adding visual depth. The external walls are also crafted from Fir wood, treated with the traditional Japanese Shou Sugi Ban technique, which involves burning the wood to enhance its durability. The single-floor dwelling utilizes pigmented micro cement throughout. Externally, this material is acid-etched to mimic the appearance of natural stone, while the interior surfaces are left smooth. The internal layout is designed to foster continuous interaction with the surrounding natural environment, largely achieved through expansive sliding glass walls. The interiors showcase a thoughtful curation of design pieces, where luxury meets functionality and artistic expression. In the sitting room, a playful ‘Cactus’ coatrack by Guido Drocco and Franco Mello immediately captures attention, positioned near a painting titled ‘Sardinia’ by Andrea Lo Papa. Kichi Architectural Design has completed the House of Kubogaoka, a cube-shaped residence in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan. The house features small square windows intermittently placed across its facades. The structure utilizes a timber framework, but its front and rear facades are finished with plaster, providing the appearance of solid concrete construction. In contrast to these two facades, the side walls of the house are painted white. According to the architects, the use of white on the side walls creates a clear visual distinction against the basic mortar color of the other exterior walls. The main entrance of the house is created by an apparent cut-away section at one corner of the cube. Upon entering, a corridor extends directly through the house to a terrace located at the rear. This corridor features a dark tiled floor, which the architects liken to the traditional earth floors found in older Japanese homes. This design element aims to evoke a sense of historical Japanese dwelling immediately upon entry, extending the concept of an 'earth-floored room' to the outdoor yard beyond. The interior of the house introduces varying floor levels and materials to define different spaces. The main living area of the first storey is raised by two steps from the entrance corridor. This change in elevation is accompanied by a transition in flooring material, moving from the dark tiles of the corridor to a wooden surface. Further into the house, this wooden surface then gives way to a grid of tatami mats, forming a traditional Japanese room. The architects state that this combination of tatami and tiles harmonizes Japanese and Western interior styles within the residence. The traditional Japanese room is designed with sliding partitions, allowing it to be separated from an adjacent long, narrow space. This adaptable space serves multiple functions as a combined living room, dining room, and kitchen. This layout facilitates an open-plan living environment while retaining the option for privacy or distinct area definitions through the use of traditional sliding screens. An outdoor dining area is integrated into a recess at the back of the house. This area is strategically aligned with a sheltered balcony on the upper floor, suggesting a vertical connection between the outdoor spaces. A staircase, constructed with wooden treads, provides access to the upper storey. This article details the complete renovation of a 1,600 sq ft, 2-storey, 3-bedroom HDB Executive Maisonette in Bishan, Singapore, designed by Sze Ming from Studio Kabi. The homeowners, a family of four with two Corgis, sought a larger living space closer to their parents and future schools for their children, leading them to this rare double-storey HDB flat. The renovation embraced a warm, minimalist, Japanese-esque aesthetic, influenced by architect Tadao Ando's principles of natural light, segmented spaces, and clean lines. The interior designer focused on functionality before aesthetics, reconfiguring the entire space by tearing down and reconstructing floors, walls, ceilings, and the staircase on both levels. The layout was meticulously planned to suit the family's needs, with all private areas (three bedrooms and a study) located on the second floor and common areas on the ground level. The design incorporates a neutral palette with natural materials like wood and stone, ensuring timelessness and avoiding transient trends. A standout feature is the custom-built pitched roof, reimagined from a flat ceiling, which creates a focal point and enhances the sense of height. The staircase was also redesigned with a curved structure and partitioning to introduce a softer touch amidst the home's angular elements, acting as a prominent feature upon entry. Originally, the homeowners considered placing the study downstairs, but Sze Ming strategically integrated it into the second floor by reconfiguring the master bedroom. The initial large master bedroom was split into two: a smaller master suite and a children's play area, which will eventually convert into a bedroom. The second floor also features a retro Smeg fridge, ensuring convenient access to cold beverages without needing to go downstairs. The master bedroom itself is kept simple, with a custom-built bed head, wall-mounted TV, and a built-in vanity dresser, with a sliding pocket door leading to an en suite bathroom that maintains the clean, minimalist aesthetic with neutral colors and stone materials, including a unique stone integrated sink. The ground floor's foyer entrance is defined by different tiling and birch wood slats from the ceiling, creating a distinct demarcation and offering privacy from the entrance. A suspended sit-down area and storage for shoes are integrated here. The living room was expanded by converting a balcony, now featuring built-in wooden seats for additional storage and a multifunctional space. An unusual hexagonal sofa and a sound system with four speakers complete the living area. The kitchen, initially not open-concept, was transformed into an open-plan space in the center of level 1, with pocket sliding doors to separate the wet and dry kitchen areas when needed. The dry kitchen includes a long island made from engineered stone and a built-in oven, with a sink in the middle. Adjacent to the kitchen, the dining room features Scandinavian-style furniture, pendant lamps from LikeLights, and an extra counter space with a coffee station and storage. An audio room, following the dining area, caters to the homeowner's passion for sound, doubling as a play area.
