RH Introduces Furnishings Inspired By Colorado’s High Country
RH (formerly Restoration Hardware) has launched its new Ski House collections, drawing inspiration from iconic alpine destinations, including Colorado's Aspen and Vail. The brand, founded in 1979 by Stephen Gordon, has evolved from offering affordable hardware and fixtures to becoming a prominent name in home furnishings and decor. RH is known for its diverse range, catering to various design aesthetics from vintage Victorian to contemporary, and has recently expanded its presence with expansive design galleries, such as the 70,000-square-foot one opened in Cherry Creek North in 2015.
The RH Ski House collection, introduced in late 2019, features over 60 new lines of furniture, lighting, textiles, and decor. These collections are influenced by distinct alpine styles found in locales like Sun Valley, Taos, Tahoe, Courchevel, Cortina, and the Colorado towns of Aspen and Vail. The designs are a result of collaborations with prominent designers such as Timothy Oulton, Theo Eichholtz, and Nicholas and Harrison Condos. The pieces are characterized by their unique blend of modern and contemporary forms, combined with organic materials rich in texture.
Key collections within RH Ski House highlight this design philosophy. Timothy Oulton’s Yeti Sheepskin collection, for instance, reinterprets 1970s postmodernism through beds, chairs, and oversized sofas and sectionals upholstered in plush, long-haired New Zealand sheepskin, designed to invite comfort and luxury. The Kendari collection showcases large slabs of suar wood, hand-chiseled with deep furrows, reflecting the dramatic and textural qualities of 1970s Brutalism. Another notable collection, Riveted Mesh, by San Francisco blacksmith Jefferson Mack, features industrial-inspired floor lamps and chandeliers. These pieces combine riveted, forged-steel structures with fine steel-mesh shades, creating a modern industrial aesthetic.
The versatility of the RH Ski House collections allows for both cohesive room outfitting and the integration of individual statement pieces into existing decor. Examples include an Adele Sheepskin armchair, which can provide a soft contrast when paired with a desk, or a low-slung, hair-on-hide-upholstered Soren chair positioned by a fireplace for a relaxed feel. The collection also offers outdoor furnishings, such as Xavier Van Lil's Merida collection, which reinterprets the classic 1950s slipper chair for outdoor use. The designs aim to evoke the serene yet rugged beauty of mountain landscapes while promoting relaxation and comfort through their material choices and forms. The collection emphasizes the combination of rough and smooth textures, as seen in the pairing of deeply-scored suar-wood dining tables with light linen-weave fabrics of dining chairs, or the soft Adele Sheepskin dining chairs complementing rustic oak tables made from salvaged timbers.
Overall, the RH Ski House collections represent a sophisticated approach to mountain-inspired decor, blending functionality with high-end design. The pieces aim to capture the essence of Colorado's high country and other renowned alpine regions, providing luxurious and aesthetically pleasing options for homeowners and designers seeking to create a refined yet comfortable alpine living environment. The comprehensive nature of the collections, from large furniture items to lighting and decor, allows for a complete design transformation or subtle enhancements to various spaces.
