How to wash towels that smell – expert tips to banish damp and musty odours for good
Towels, whether used in the kitchen or bathroom, can develop unpleasant odors if not properly washed and dried. These smells often stem from bacteria growth, mold or mildew due to dampness, and even residual detergent or fabric softener. Proper washing and drying techniques are crucial not only for eliminating existing smells but also for extending the lifespan and maintaining the quality of towels.
To effectively wash smelly towels, a multi-step approach is recommended. First, give each towel a thorough shake to dislodge debris and separate them by color and fabric type to prevent color bleeding and ensure adequate cleaning. Avoid overloading the washing machine, allowing enough space for towels to move freely. A crucial step involves pre-soaking the towels in a solution of warm water and one cup of white vinegar for at least an hour. White vinegar is effective in breaking down bacteria and mildew, and towels will not retain a vinegar smell after washing. This pre-soak also contributes to keeping towels soft.
Following the pre-soak, wash the towels in the washing machine on a high heat setting, always checking care labels for the safest temperature. A small amount of regular detergent can be used, but fabric softener should be avoided. Fabric softener can leave a residue that attracts moisture, hindering complete drying and potentially leading to recurrent odors. Avoiding fabric softener also helps maintain towel fluffiness. For particularly smelly towels, adding half a cup of bicarbonate of soda during the rinse cycle can neutralize odors and further freshen the fabric.
Thorough drying is paramount. If using a tumble dryer, run it on a high heat setting. Alternatively, line drying outdoors in warmth or sun is highly effective. It is critical that towels are completely dry before folding and storing. Even slight dampness can cause odors to return due to moisture retention.
To prevent towels from smelling unpleasant in the future, several practices should be adopted. After each use, hang damp towels individually to dry, ensuring sufficient air circulation to prevent mildew. Avoid placing wet towels or clothes directly into a laundry hamper, as this can exacerbate odor development. A deep clean, involving the vinegar and baking soda wash, should be performed monthly to maintain freshness. Immediately remove towels from the washing machine after the cycle finishes to minimize the time they remain wet. Prompt drying, whether in a dryer or on a line, is key. Investing in a dehumidifier can be beneficial for indoor drying, especially during winter months. Finally, towels should only be stored once they are entirely dry, ideally in a well-ventilated area to prevent moisture accumulation. Natural methods such as air drying in sunlight, adding tea tree oil to washes for its antibacterial properties, and placing lavender sachets in storage areas can also help keep towels smelling fresh.
