We Need This Denver-Inspired Wallpaper
Batya Stepelman, a former PR professional with a strong passion for wallpaper, established WallTawk & Design in 2016. Her boutique and design consultancy specializes in selling wallpapers by independent designers and artists. Stepelman’s desire to create a Denver-centric wallpaper was ignited by Flavor Paper’s Brooklyn Toile wallcovering, which skillfully integrates iconic imagery of the Big Apple into what appears to be a traditional toile pattern. Lacking drawing skills herself, Stepelman sought out a local artist who could translate her vision into reality, leading her to botanical illustrator Meredith Feniak.
Feniak's artistic talent, previously observed in local installations such as Bloom by Anuschka in Cherry Creek North and Next Door Community Pub at Union Station, greatly impressed Stepelman. Stepelman admired Feniak's beautiful, unique, and meticulous work, recognizing her thoughtful approach as crucial for designing intricate wallpaper patterns. The collaboration resulted in WallTawk's inaugural original pattern, Denver Damask. This design began with a classic, antique damask motif, which was then creatively enhanced with subtle, stylized elements that pay homage to Colorado.
The Denver Damask pattern incorporates various iconic Colorado elements. These include wagon wheels, a tribute to the state's pioneering history; the Twin Sisters Peaks, included by Feniak in honor of her twin sons; the marquee of the Bluebird Theater, a nod to Stepelman’s affection for Colfax Avenue; and Union Station’s distinguished clock, notably set to 3:03. Feniak also integrated botanical elements like columbines and ash trees, with the ash tree serving as a personal reference to her childhood street and a gesture to highlight the challenges faced by ash trees due to the ash-borer problem.
The intricate Denver Damask pattern is versatile, available for printing on various materials such as clay-coated, pearlescent, and vellum papers, as well as grasscloth. Customers can choose from five standard colorways: warm charcoal on matte black, gold on green, graphite on mauve, ink on parchment, and a tonal gray grasscloth. Additionally, since the rolls are printed to order, clients have the flexibility to select any color from printing company Twenty2’s extensive ink library, allowing for personalized customization. The wallpaper starts at $52.80 per roll and can be purchased through walltawk.com.
This project not only fulfilled Stepelman's creative aspirations but also fueled her commitment to community involvement. Ten percent of the proceeds generated from the sales of Denver Damask wallpaper are dedicated to supporting Rainbow Alley, a local nonprofit organization. Stepelman is currently developing two additional collaborative WallTawk patterns, both of which are intended to benefit local charities, reflecting her sustained dedication to giving back to the community through her design work. This approach underscores her philosophy that quality design, especially when imbued with local significance and social purpose, is a worthwhile endeavor.
