The client's primary goals were to add storage, transition away from natural gas, and incorporate air conditioning, laundry, and a dishwasher. Additionally, the space needed areas for dining and working, all while maintaining the small footprint. The building, known as the Fifth Ward Wardroom and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, has a rich past, having served as a polling place, a school, and an American Legion post, and has housed generations of Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) professors. McDonough, a RISD alumna herself, and MacKean embraced the building's 140-year history when they purchased it a decade ago. The artists inherited a space previously used as a printmaking studio, which they decided to adapt for residential living rather than their own artistic practices. To guide the renovation, they collaborated with RISD alumni friends, architect Anastasia Laurenzi and Michael Larsen of Oblique Studio. Their approach focused on utilizing humble materials, embracing wabi-sabi principles, and preserving the building's original character while making it more functional for modern life. Despite significant changes, including the addition of a kitchen, a lofted bedroom, a powder room, a laundry area, and a full bathroom, the unique quirks and historical essence of the structure were carefully maintained.
