This Custom Wall of Closets Has a Storage Surprise Hidden in the Center
Designers Christina Valencia and Kele Dobrinski of Colossus Mfg, also hosts of the HGTV show 'Mash-Up Our Home,' faced the challenge of creating a highly functional and aesthetically pleasing clothing storage solution for clients Megan and Christopher Lim in Sacramento, California. The clients' minimalist approach to clothing meant the storage system needed to be efficient rather than expansive. The designers decided to create a custom wall of closets, moving beyond standard bifold or sliding door designs by incorporating an antique wardrobe as its central element.
The inspiration for this unique storage solution came from an antique Drexel cabinet found in the designers' storage warehouse, originally a Craigslist find. Recognizing the potential for both quality and flexibility, they chose to integrate this vintage piece due to its pull-out drawers, ideal for organizing smaller items like socks and pajamas. This strategic placement of the ready-made wardrobe was a cost-effective alternative to expensive custom cabinetry.
The construction process involved several steps. First, the legs and top ledge of the Drexel wardrobe were removed. Then, the designers constructed two reach-in closets off-site at their shop. These custom-built units were designed to flank the vintage wardrobe. Additionally, an open shoe rack was built underneath, which served to elevate the entire structure to the ceiling, giving the impression of a singular, built-in unit.
Installing the large components of the closet wall presented a particular challenge, especially the two tall boxes intended for long hanging items. These units were nearly the exact height of the ceiling, requiring a tricky angled maneuver to tip them into place. Once all sections were securely installed, the entire assembly, including trim, was sprayed with Sherwin-Williams’s Ancient Marble paint, a beigey white with subtle sage green undertones. The final touch involved adding new hardware, sourced from Etsy, to all the doors, completing the transformation. This project successfully blended vintage charm with modern functionality, demonstrating an innovative approach to upcycled furniture and custom storage solutions that appear seamlessly integrated into the home's design.
