This Custom Closet Is Like a Walk-in Jewelry Box for an Entire Wardrobe
This article highlights the meticulously organized 450-square-foot closet of event planner David Monn, designed to function as a highly personal and efficient dressing room. Monn's approach to his wardrobe emphasizes uniformity and meticulous care, driven by a desire for calm and a historical necessity for preservation. His white shirts, for instance, appear identical but are, in fact, six distinct variations in fabric, reflecting a nuanced approach to clothing selection. The same principle applies to his blue shirts and jeans, with multiple versions from specific brands like Jean Shop, each serving a different purpose or comfort level.
The closet itself is a custom-built marvel, crafted by Rimi Woodcraft Corp. in a renovation overseen by High Line Construction, with flooring by I.J. Peiser’s Sons. Every detail is considered for both aesthetics and functionality. Monn's shoes, primarily from Lobb, Belgian Shoes, and Prada, are meticulously stored with custom-fitted shoe trees from Shoe Tree Marketplace, enhanced with an added knob for ease of use. His shirts from Geneva Custom Shirts are hung on custom-finished Henry Hangers, spaced precisely to prevent wrinkles, with French cuffs perfectly aligned. His suits are a curated collection from designers like Jay Kos, David Lance, and Tom Ford.
Beyond just hanging clothes, the closet integrates specific solutions for accessories. A bronze stand is conveniently placed for setting down cufflinks while dressing. An impressive collection of 246 pocket squares is neatly organized across five drawers, and 56 pairs of cufflinks are meticulously displayed. The design also incorporates a dedicated desk area within the closet where Monn conducts his early morning correspondence, underscoring the space's multifunctionality and his highly disciplined routine.
Monn's philosophy, born from humble beginnings, dictates that possessions should be cared for and retained rather than discarded, emphasizing durability and lasting quality. This personal history has shaped his systematic approach to his wardrobe, where order and precision are not merely an obsession but a means to achieve a sense of tranquility and efficiency in his daily life. The closet is a testament to bespoke design, where every element contributes to a highly personalized and functional environment that reflects its owner's specific needs and aesthetic sensibilities.
