Designers inspired by children room decor
Decorating children's rooms has evolved into a stylish and enjoyable endeavor, with a wide array of vibrant and contemporary patterns available for various items such as baby blankets, crib bedding, curtain panels, pillows, and rugs. This trend allows children's spaces to be as modern and up-to-date as any other room in the house. The children's room decor industry has experienced significant growth, marked by national design competitions, contributions from major wallpaper companies, and involvement from local design professionals, all contributing to an expanding range of choices and stylistic options.
Two notable examples from Decorating Den franchises highlight current trends. Yelena Gertz, a designer from Staten Island, N.Y., created a first-place winning gender-neutral nursery. This design incorporated yellow polka dot wallpaper and modern furniture, with an 8-foot, peel-off giraffe, monkey, and birds serving as striking graphic elements. This approach moves beyond traditional nursery aesthetics, offering a distinct and contemporary feel. Similarly, Terry Varner, a Decorating Den designer in Baltimore, Md., designed a multi-purpose room for her granddaughter that also functions as a guest room for adults. Varner opted for a Country French style, drawing an Irish blue periwinkle wall color from a classic Pierre Deux fabric pattern. The inclusion of a daybed, characteristic of Country French design, with a trundle bed, provides both stylistic cohesion and practical functionality for accommodating overnight guests.
Color trends in children's rooms favor strong, vibrant hues. While pink remains popular for nurseries, lavender and purple are gaining traction for girls' rooms. For boys' rooms, traditional red, white, and blue combinations continue to be favored, alongside black as a background color. Dayglow shades such as fuchsia, electric yellow, and purple are frequently used as accent colors, adding pops of brightness and energy. These color preferences are reflected in the diverse range of wallpapers, borders, and self-adhesive, die-cut products available.
Malcolm Cooper, creative director of Blue Mountain Wallcoverings, notes that nurseries often introduce young families to wallpaper. Although borders have become less common in other areas of the house, they remain a strong element in nurseries and children's rooms. These borders are often removable or changeable, allowing for flexibility and easy updates, and can be integrated with either papered or painted walls. They can also be used with a single feature wall to unify a room's theme. Feature walls can be enhanced with wallpaper murals, mini murals, or self-adhesive die-cut images, often positioned behind the bed to act as a headboard and anchor the room.
Popular motifs for children's rooms include jungle animals, cats, dogs, horses, various sports themes, cars, dinosaurs, and licensed characters, catering to a wide range of interests. Ceilings also offer decorative potential, with options ranging from solar systems on black backgrounds to realistic cloudscapes on blue. When selecting wallpaper, durability is a key consideration, with protective coatings that allow for easy cleaning being highly recommended.
Local designers draw inspiration from their surroundings. Danielle Marciano, an Ocala designer, suggests bright tropical sea-foam green for room colors or accent walls, and she recently designed a nursery featuring classic blue and khaki brown with a fish border at chair-rail height, emphasizing the classic background that allows for future modifications. Isabelle Degremont, a Gainesville decorative painter, created a two-wall mural for a boy's room depicting a seascape with pirates, parrots, a pirate ship, dolphins, and buried treasures, showcasing the potential for custom artistic expressions in children's spaces.
