These Ceramic UU Tiles by Unknown, Untitled Double as Hooks and Lamps
The Paris-based studio Unknown, Untitled has introduced a novel and innovative tile collection known as UU Tiles, which redefines the conventional understanding of ceramic tiles. Moving beyond their traditional role as merely aesthetic and protective surface coverings, these tiles integrate functionality by doubling as hooks and minimalist wall lamps. This concept emerged from a research project and was developed in collaboration with a historic tile manufacturer in Normandy.
The UU Tiles collection challenges the prevailing design trend of temporary and flexible home furnishings, instead advocating for a philosophy of sustainable permanence. By embracing the fixed nature of tiling, Unknown, Untitled transforms walls into integrated systems that offer both visual appeal and practical utility. This approach encourages a more deliberate and long-term perspective on interior design, emphasizing the value of durability and reducing the lifecycle of disposable products.
The collection comprises three primary components: standard plain tiles, ceramic hooks, and ceramic wall lamps. Each of these elements shares a consistent tile-based attachment system, ensuring seamless integration and a cohesive aesthetic. The functional tiles, including the hooks and lamps, are designed with identical dimensions and a range of tonal options that allow them to blend harmoniously with the decorative tiles. This thoughtful design creates what the studio describes as a "physical interface between the architecture and the living space," where functional elements are subtly embedded within the overall tiling scheme.
Whether utilized for hanging coats or illuminating a hallway, the integrated nature of these tiles means that the underlying ceramic structure remains constant, serving as a subtle yet deliberate design feature. Even when viewed as individual items, the hooks and lamps exhibit a clean, minimal, and unexpectedly warm aesthetic. Their glossy surfaces not only reflect light but also communicate a clear design intention. Each functional tile is available in various colors, offering flexibility for diverse interior palettes.
The concept of permanent storage and lighting, which the UU Tiles embody, might initially seem restrictive compared to the ease of swapping out temporary fixtures. However, this permanence is presented as a positive attribute, promoting a more considered and thoughtful design process. It encourages consumers and designers to prioritize longevity and durability, aligning with environmental considerations by minimizing waste and the constant replacement of items. In an era dominated by disposable consumerism, the commitment to long-lasting, built-in design solutions like UU Tiles represents a quietly radical stance.
The design of the lamps and hooks allows for their use as standalone pieces, without the surrounding plain tiles, offering a minimalist alternative for those seeking a more pared-back aesthetic. This versatility ensures that the UU Tiles can adapt to various design preferences while maintaining their core principles of integrated functionality and enduring design. The collection stands as an example of how thoughtful design can transform everyday building materials into multifunctional elements that enhance both the aesthetics and practicality of a living space.
