Statement Lighting You Can Build a Room Around
Designers often refer to lighting as the "jewelry of a room," suggesting that light fixtures serve as accessories to enhance a space's aesthetic. This perspective, however, limits the potential of lighting. Instead, statement lighting can act as the foundational element from which an entire room's decor is conceived. This approach allows lighting to be the primary inspiration, influencing furniture selection, color palettes, room layout, and even artwork.
The article highlights several premium pieces from Arteriors, a design-industry favorite known for its expertly crafted collection, to demonstrate how specific lighting fixtures can serve as anchor pieces. The Melt Chandelier, designed by Workshop/APD, features a series of glass drops that create a fluid, almost dripping effect. Its installation can be symmetrical, emphasizing architectural features like a tray ceiling and the curves of furniture, or linear, complementing a strikingly long dining table and guiding the eye across the room.
The Griffith Two Tiered Chandelier immediately evokes a midcentury-modern aesthetic with its round, cupped plates and geometric starburst of spokes. Its impressive size, double tiers, and dark metal create a bold presence, while the upward-reflecting plates cast a soft, warm glow. When such a strong statement piece is at the core of a design, other elements in the room, such as delicate sconces, subtle accessories, and neutral-colored textiles with lush textures, can contribute to the midcentury theme more subtly.
Another example is the Fatima Pendant, characterized by rows of dangling brass chains that give it the appearance of an extravagant, oversized tassel. This pendant serves as both a statement piece and the "jewelry" of a Hollywood Regency-style bedroom, anchoring an opulent design. Similarly, the Aramis Sconce by Barry Dixon for Arteriors, standing over three feet tall with brass casting and dramatic dangling brass wire "ponytails," functions as both art and illumination. A pair of these sconces can create an ideal focal point in a flamboyant foyer, or stunningly frame a large artwork.
For smaller spaces, the Leon Chandelier can make a significant impact. In a bathroom, its three tiers of glazed-glass plates command attention, with its effect amplified by its reflection in a mirror. The shimmering, oyster-like forms of the plates exude exuberance, setting a maximalist tone that can be echoed in elements like bold wallpaper patterns. These examples collectively illustrate that statement lighting is not merely an accessory but can be the central inspiration, defining the character and mood of a room.
