Quentin de Coster's Lasso light is shaped like a torch
Belgian designer Quentin de Coster has developed the Lasso lamp for French brand Ligne Roset's Cinna division, a lighting fixture that visually emulates a flashlight suspended from the ceiling. The lamp's design intentionally incorporates a functional aspect for its electrical cabling, moving beyond its traditional role of merely supplying power. De Coster's aim was to create a poetic light that encourages user interaction, drawing inspiration from archetypes and transforming everyday gestures into meaningful experiences.
The Lasso lamp features a powder-coated steel tube as its main body, precision-cut using computer numerically controlled (CNC) technology. A key design element is the black electrical cable, which can extend up to 4.8 meters in length. This cable not only suspends the lamp but also allows for adjustability. A second, shorter length of cabling is attached near the bulb end of the lamp and connects back to the main suspension cable via a small, movable sliding device. This mechanism enables users to change the angle of the light, offering flexibility in directing illumination within a space.
The name 'Lasso' is derived from the adjustable noose-like device, reminiscent of those used by cowboys, which allows for the manipulation of the lamp's orientation. This interactive feature is central to De Coster's design philosophy, emphasizing the cable's dual function beyond simple energy transmission. The lamp attaches to the ceiling using a powder-coated steel ceiling rose, available in the same color as the lamp. This fixture can be circular for a single lamp installation or linear to accommodate two lamps, one at each end, providing versatile mounting options.
De Coster describes his design approach as one that seeks to infuse new, authentic, and playful elements into products, helping to enrich daily life with significant details. The Lasso lamp embodies this philosophy by offering a familiar yet reinterpreted form, combining minimal aesthetics with interactive functionality. The collaboration with Ligne Roset, a brand known for its contemporary furniture and home accessories, further positions the Lasso lamp as a piece that blends modern design with practical application, designed to be both aesthetically pleasing and engaging for the user.
This design contributes to the ongoing evolution of lighting solutions, where designers explore how fixtures can be more than just sources of light but also interactive elements that shape the ambiance and functionality of a living space. The Lasso lamp exemplifies a thoughtful approach to industrial design, focusing on user engagement and the reimagination of conventional object forms.
