Ceiling Wallpaper Ideas — The 8 Ways Designers Are Using Pattern Overhead That Will Inspire a Room Makeover

Ceiling wallpaper is emerging as a significant design trend, offering a departure from the traditional white-painted ceiling, often referred to as the 'fifth wall.' Design experts are increasingly recognizing the potential of this often-overlooked surface to make a substantial design statement. Elizabeth Rees, co-founder of Chasing Paper, emphasizes that any room can benefit from ceiling wallpaper, transforming a typically plain area into a focal point for design. The versatility of ceiling wallpaper extends beyond mere aesthetics, providing practical benefits for interior spaces. One key advantage is its ability to influence the perception of a room's dimensions and atmosphere. For instance, Jodi Peterman, founder of Elizabeth Erin Design, notes that dark wallpaper in a tall tray ceiling can create a cozier feel, while lighter colors with a pattern can make a room appear taller by drawing the eye upwards. This design strategy was notably prevalent at New York Design Week, indicating its growing popularity among industry professionals. Designers are employing ceiling wallpaper in various creative ways to enhance home interiors. Integrating ceiling wallpaper with the existing color scheme is one effective technique. Phillip Thomas, an interior designer, demonstrates this by using a subtle floral wallpaper on both walls and ceiling in an entryway, where the print's colors complement the room's upholstered furniture and wood tones, creating a cohesive and enveloping effect. Another consideration is the choice of pattern; unlike wall coverings, ceiling wallpaper is viewed from multiple angles. Gideon Mendelson of Mendelson Group, therefore, recommends geometric patterns or textures that do not appear upside down, making them suitable for spaces like entryways, powder rooms, and children's playrooms where unique design elements are encouraged. Ceiling wallpaper can also address design challenges posed by low ceilings, common in attic rooms or lofts. Embracing these architectural features with whimsical patterns, as seen in a collaboration between Chasing Paper and Jenni Yolo, can make such spaces feel cozy and visually interesting, especially in bedrooms where people spend considerable time looking upwards. Additionally, wallpaper can transform quiet or utilitarian corners, such as butler's pantries, into engaging experiences, as highlighted by Eric Drozd of Drozd Design, where dim lighting can accentuate the ceiling's design. Adding a playful touch to a child's bedroom with color-blocked paint and a vibrant wallpapered ceiling can inspire creativity and reflect personality, as illustrated by Chris McGovern of McGovern Project. Furthermore, using the same wallpaper on both walls and ceiling can blur the lines of a room, making it appear larger and more enveloping, a tactic particularly effective in smaller rooms or those with slanted ceilings. This technique creates a rich, cohesive feel that solid-color paint might not achieve. Lastly, ceiling wallpaper is an excellent tool for accentuating architectural features like tray or coffered ceilings, drawing attention to unique details and making a grand statement, as demonstrated by Cecilia Casagrande. When selecting wallpaper for ceilings, designers advise opting for subtle patterns in larger spaces and bolder prints in smaller areas like powder rooms. Light colors, small geometric patterns, and soft florals are generally recommended for a soothing effect. The choice of wallpaper should also consider the room's height, size, and natural light to create desired visual illusions, whether making a room feel taller or cozier. While adaptable to almost any room, powder rooms are a favored spot for creating unexpected design moments, though areas prone to high moisture, such as bathrooms and kitchens, are generally to be avoided. #CeilingWallpaper #InteriorDesign #HomeDecor #DesignTrends #RoomMakeover #WallpaperIdeas #FifthWall #ResidentialDesign #CeilingWallpaper #InteriorDesign #HomeDecor #DesignTrends #RoomMakeover #WallpaperIdeas #FifthWall #ResidentialDesign
