kim yun-hwan composes furniture pieces using hand-carved wooden shapes

Seoul-based designer Kim Yun-Hwan has developed a distinctive collection of furniture, dubbed the 'Unintended Series,' which features hand-carved wooden shapes forming unique and organic pieces. The collection's genesis began with a single, small, organic shape intended for a tray and a standalone object. This initial concept evolved into a more ambitious endeavor as Yun-Hwan decided to connect multiple such shapes, culminating in larger, curvilinear forms, exemplified by a cabinet door. The core philosophy behind the 'Unintended Series' is to capture and express the moment of transformative change that occurs when disparate, organic elements are brought together and integrated into a cohesive whole. The creation of each piece in the 'Unintended Series' is a labor-intensive, entirely handmade process, reflecting a deep commitment to craftsmanship. The designer dedicates approximately 12 hours a day to carving and shaping the wood, with the entire collection requiring nearly a month to complete. This meticulous approach ensures that each piece is imbued with a unique character and bears the marks of human touch and precision. The fabrication process begins with a detailed design plan, where Yun-Hwan sketches the intended form on a 1:1 section paper. This blueprint guides the subsequent stages of carving and shaping. To bring his designs to life, Yun-Hwan employs a variety of traditional hand tools. He uses a hand grinder for broader shaping, a hand miller for more intricate detailing, and a curving knife to achieve the organic, flowing lines that define the series. After the initial carving, the pieces undergo a rigorous buffing process using sandpaper, which refines the surfaces and prepares them for the final treatment. The concluding step involves applying an oil layer, which not only enhances the natural beauty and grain of the wood but also provides protection and a smooth finish. The materials selected for the 'Unintended Series' include high-quality hardwoods such as oak, cherry, walnut, and ash wood, each chosen for its unique aesthetic properties and durability. The 'Unintended Series' stands as a testament to the beauty of organic forms and the artistry of hand-carved wood. By transforming simple, natural shapes into functional and aesthetically pleasing furniture, Kim Yun-Hwan offers a fresh perspective on contemporary design, emphasizing the journey of creation and the inherent beauty found in the evolution of form. The collection highlights the designer's ability to blend traditional woodworking techniques with a modern design sensibility, resulting in pieces that are both sculptural and practical. #FurnitureDesign #HandCarvedWood #WoodenFurniture #OrganicShapes #KimYunHwan #SeoulDesign #ContemporaryCrafts #Woodworking #InteriorDesign #FurnitureDesign #HandCarvedWood #WoodenFurniture #OrganicShapes #KimYunHwan #SeoulDesign #ContemporaryCrafts #Woodworking #InteriorDesign
