Monte Design doubles its traffic goals by upgrading its ecommerce strategy

Monte Design, a Canadian company specializing in high-quality, stylish, and comfortable furniture for nurseries and homes, was founded in 2005 by Ralph and Michelle Montemurro. The couple established the business after failing to find suitable furniture for their son's nursery, prompting them to design their own. For nearly a decade, Monte Design enjoyed market dominance, with its products being praised for their craftsmanship and simple design, often transitioning from nursery pieces to living room furniture. However, the company began to face significant challenges with the proliferation of cheaply made knockoffs that imitated Monte Design's aesthetic but sold at a fraction of the price. These imitation products started to negatively impact Monte Design's sales and reputation. Compounding this issue was the company's existing e-commerce platform, which lacked the robust analytical capabilities needed to understand customer journeys comprehensively. The Montemurros found themselves unable to track crucial data points, such as customer acquisition channels, navigation paths, cart abandonment reasons, or overall customer behavior, hindering their ability to adapt to market changes and combat the rise of competitors. Recognizing the need for a strategic overhaul, Monte Design decided to upgrade its e-commerce infrastructure by migrating to Shopify Plus in January 2018. This move was driven by a desire to revitalize their online presence, gain deeper customer insights, and ultimately reclaim their leading position in the market. With the guidance of Shopify Plus, Monte Design prioritized several key objectives: significantly increasing web traffic, optimizing their online experience for mobile users, and enhancing their marketing strategies through a better understanding of customer preferences and behaviors. One of the immediate benefits Monte Design experienced was improved clarity on their advertising spend, particularly with Google Ads. Shopify Plus helped them understand the complexities of tracking conversions, enabling them to measure the return on investment for their ad campaigns more effectively—a capability they lacked previously. A crucial insight gained from the analytics provided by Shopify Plus was that 70% of their web traffic originated from mobile devices. This data prompted Monte Design to make mobile optimization a top priority, a process that was significantly streamlined by Shopify Plus's inherent mobile-friendly design, eliminating the need for a separate mobile site development, which had been a requirement with their previous provider. To further strengthen their market position against knockoffs, Monte Design collaborated with Shopify Plus on a comprehensive review of their website. This led to several marketing enhancements, including more prominent display of shipping incentives and expanded product slideshows to better showcase the quality and design of their furniture. An SEO analysis was also conducted to improve their search engine visibility and attract more organic traffic. These strategic adjustments and platform enhancements yielded tangible results. Since implementing Shopify Plus, Monte Design has seen impressive growth, including a 15% increase in web traffic and a 12% year-over-year revenue growth. They nearly doubled their initial traffic goal of 5% within four months. The improved analytics provided by the new platform gave them unprecedented access to customer data and traffic insights. The website improvements also supported both online sales and in-store purchases through their retail partners by driving new customers to specialty baby and kids stores across North America via a new "Find a Store" section.
