This Homeowner Used Curved Beams To Cover Up Aircon Trunking In Their Dining Room For Just $200
This article details the renovation of a 4-room HDB flat in Pasir Ris, showcasing a creative approach to interior design that incorporates functional and aesthetic curves. The renovation, spearheaded by Cheryl Yeo of Roomable, cost the homeowners a total of $83,500 and highlights how seemingly minor design elements can significantly enhance a home's overall appeal and functionality. The central feature of the design is the innovative use of curved beams to conceal unsightly air conditioning trunking in the dining room, a solution that was both cost-effective and visually pleasing.
The homeowner's desire for curved features led to an ingenious solution for the aircon trunking. Instead of simply boxing up the pipes, which is a common practice, the design integrated them within a curved beam structure. This element not only hid the pipes and wires but also created a beautiful focal point in the living and dining area. Despite initial concerns about reducing visual space, the design maintained a comfortable height clearance of 1.9 meters. The construction of this curved feature was remarkably inexpensive, costing only $200 to $400, and was completed within a few hours. Cheryl Yeo emphasized that curved features introduce softness and visual interest, making spaces more child and elderly-friendly by softening hard edges and corners, while also promoting a sense of flow.
The innovative use of curves extended beyond the dining area into the bathroom. Here, the shower wall features a dramatic design with curves at both the top and bottom, further enhanced by a limewash paint finish. This textured paint is not only aesthetically pleasing but also practical, being resistant to high humidity, naturally anti-bacterial, and mold-resistant. A key request from the homeowners was a grout-free shower wall, which the limewash coating successfully achieved, contributing to a seamless and clean look.
The kitchen area underwent a significant transformation, transitioning from a closed-off space to an open-concept layout. This change was primarily driven by the homeowners' passion for cooking and baking, requiring a design that facilitated continuous movement and integration with the rest of the home, particularly the dining room. Opening up the kitchen also allowed for an abundance of natural light to stream in, illuminating both the kitchen and adjacent dining area, creating a bright and airy ambiance.
Finally, the children's bedrooms were designed with a focus on interior styling and the strategic use of loose furniture. Cheryl considered designing these rooms her favorite part of the project due to the opportunity to use bolder colors, styles, and patterns. The decision to prioritize loose furniture over built-in fixtures provides crucial flexibility, allowing the rooms to adapt as the children grow and their preferences evolve. This thoughtful approach ensures the spaces remain relevant and cherished over time, completing a renovation that masterfully balances aesthetics, functionality, and cost-effectiveness through clever design choices, especially the integration of subtle yet impactful curves throughout the home.
