6 unexpected kitchen materials you'll see everywhere in 2026

In the evolving landscape of kitchen design, 2026 is poised to introduce a shift from conventional materials to more unique and layered options, moving beyond the perpetually popular wood and marble. This exploration delves into six unexpected materials that designers anticipate will gain widespread prominence, influencing everything from countertops and hardware to decorative accents. The first material highlighted is lava stone, particularly for kitchen countertops. Praised for its natural beauty and exceptional durability, lava stone is heat-resistant and long-lasting, making it ideal for the demanding environment of a kitchen. Its glazing process ensures subtle variations in tone and texture, guaranteeing that no two pieces are identical, offering a distinctive yet timeless aesthetic that departs from traditional stone choices. Interior designer Lauren Gilberthorpe emphasizes its unique, striking appearance and enduring quality. Next, the article discusses the resurgence of iron and antique bronze finishes. While brass remains a classic and cooler-toned metals like chrome and nickel have seen a recent revival, 2026 is expected to draw inspiration from Spanish kitchen styles, favoring the less polished, darker tones of iron and antique bronze. These materials offer a dramatic contrast to traditional finishes and are increasingly being incorporated into various kitchen designs, from modern spaces with deep bronze hardware to wooden kitchens featuring statement iron pendant lights. Small details in these metals are noted for their ability to add visual interest and depth to a kitchen scheme. Terracotta, traditionally associated with charming Italian and French homes, is making a significant comeback. After reappearing in bathrooms, designers predict its widespread use in kitchens across different styles, including traditional, farmhouse, transitional, and modern. Molly Torres Portnof, principal designer at DATE Interiors, notes terracotta's versatility as a tile backsplash, flooring, or even painted surface, creating a warm and comfortable atmosphere in the kitchen. The fourth material explored is metals, marking a shift from softer, cozier trends to more utilitarian finishes. Stainless steel and other metallic options are set to dominate, from cabinets to countertops. Christopher Sale of Gramercy Design highlights the versatility of metal, suggesting its integration through vintage pharmacy cabinets, entire stainless steel clad kitchens, or practical stainless steel countertops for prep islands and sculleries. Heather Kates of MDI Luxury Design anticipates a comeback for zinc countertops, appreciating its beautiful living finish that develops a blue-gray patina over time, along with its ease of cleaning and antimicrobial properties. Glazed ceramics are experiencing a quiet revolution, extending beyond typical backsplashes to cover entire walls, much like paint or plaster. Jordan Ross, principal designer at PCD Studios, explains that glazed tiles are not only aesthetically pleasing but also highly durable, wipeable, and forgiving, perfectly suited for the realities of a busy kitchen. Their versatility allows them to complement a wide range of materials and colors, offering a timeless yet practical solution for kitchen surfaces. Finally, concrete, often reserved for outdoor spaces, is emerging as a sought-after material for indoor kitchens. While concrete countertops are trending, the article cautions about their fragility for functional features, suggesting that concrete accents in lighting and decor might be more practical for those who prefer surfaces that do not age or mark. Textured pendant lights, statement counter lamps, and decorative vases are recommended ways to introduce concrete, adding depth and a curated contrast of materials to a space. These unexpected materials collectively offer avenues to refresh and personalize kitchen designs, adding character and uniqueness to any cooking space. #KitchenDesignTrends #MaterialInnovation #InteriorDesign #HomeRenovation #LavaStone #AntiqueBronze #Terracotta #MetallicFinishes #GlazedCeramics #ConcreteDecor #KitchenDesignTrends #MaterialInnovation #InteriorDesign #HomeRenovation #LavaStone #AntiqueBronze #Terracotta #MetallicFinishes #GlazedCeramics #ConcreteDecor
