The Block 2023: Backyard Reveal
The Blockheads have completed their backyard renovations, moving from interior work to outdoor living spaces, pools, and elaborate garden designs. The judging panel, including gardening expert Dave Franklin, evaluated the transformations.
Steph and Gian secured first place with 38 points. Their outdoor entertaining space, featuring roll-down awnings, was praised as a game-changer. The judges noted the effective zoning of the garden, which included a BBQ area, dining room, firepit, pizza kitchen, pool, and sauna, creating what Shaynna described as a “wellness retreat.” The design incorporated round steppers, volcanic rock, timber, and glass, contributing to a high potential resale value for House 4. The only minor criticisms were a sloped concrete area and a lack of heating.
Leah and Ash earned second place with 37.5 points. Their outdoor entertainment area was described as “zen” by Dave, showcasing an architecturally-designed barbecue space and deck framed by a large tree and a studio. A tiled pool also impressed the judges. Shaynna highlighted the area's versatility, noting its adult-friendly features while also accommodating children with five separate seating zones. The use of Knotwood cladding, porous concrete patio, and a large Camerich daybed contributed to a successful design.
Kyle and Leslie placed third with 33 points. Their backyard featured a large shower head over a circular Plungie pool, creating a “wow factor.” Dave admired how the curves of the stepping stones and pool reflected the home’s interior design. He suggested the design was cover-worthy for a sale brochure, praising the execution and plant placement. However, Shaynna and Darren identified issues with spatial planning, specifically the pizza oven's proximity to the kitchen and concerns about the veggie garden, despite the overall visual appeal.
Kristy and Brett finished fourth with 28 points. Their design, which included two outdoor entertainment spaces at the front of their house, was initially seen as a superpower by Marty. However, Dave was critical, calling the planting schedule “a dog’s breakfast.” While the size of the pool impressed Marty and Darren, Shaynna found the hedge against the fence misplaced and the firepit seating too cramped, noting that more work was needed.
Eliza and Liberty received fifth place with 27 points, facing budget and planning challenges. Their pared-back garden design initially gained points for festoon lighting, but the overall impression did not last. Dave found the concrete excessive and the potted jasmine insufficient, with the sharp, angular design lacking warmth. The firepit area was deemed too low and shallow, surrounded by untidy planting. Marty concluded that the undercover barbecue area felt more like a shed than a poolside retreat, suggesting timber decking could improve the space.
